SchoolFan: Europe's Innovative Response to Combat Climate Misinformation Among Youth

A New Initiative to Combat Climate Misinformation



In a groundbreaking effort to tackle climate misinformation, SchoolFan has emerged as the first European initiative aimed at educating young people on this pressing issue. Aimed at teenagers, this innovative educational project utilizes a pioneering educational model that enables participants to detect as much as 90% of false climate-related information circulating on social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

Over two years, SchoolFan has united students from Spain, Portugal, France, and Greece, with the project's conclusion set for June 28, 2026. This initiative is part of the Erasmus+ program, reflecting a collaborative effort to foster media literacy among adolescents.

The Challenge of Misinformation



Research indicates that misleading content about climate change remains pervasive, particularly in Southern Europe. An evaluation of content analyzed revealed troubling statistics: 27% of climate-related posts examined in Portugal were incorrect, followed by 20% in Spain, 19% in Greece, and a relatively lower 8% in France.

This alarming data underscores the urgency of equipping the youth with skills to navigate the complexities of information they encounter online. However, SchoolFan's training demonstrated remarkable outcomes, with participants achieving an accuracy rate between 80% and 90% in identifying misleading information after completing their specialized training program. This success illustrates the potential of structured educational approaches in combating misinformation.

An Educational Model for Europe



SchoolFan mobilized a significant community, involving over 350 secondary students and 93 teachers across its partner countries. Educational institutions like the University of Aveiro, Rey Juan Carlos University, NOVA University Lisbon, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and the French organization Cercle FSER were instrumental in developing this initiative.

One of the key legacies of SchoolFan is the creation of a guide of good practices and a range of digital resources designed for educators. Available in five different languages, these resources aim to facilitate the incorporation of media and climate education into the curriculum of schools across Europe. These materials will be accessible to educators and educational institutions following the project's official closure on June 28.
