Ikoma City and Furusato Choice Launch New Government Crowdfunding for Small Businesses

Revitalization of Ikomina: New Business Ventures through Government Crowdfunding

In a collaborative effort to breathe new life into the Ikomina area of Ikoma City, Nara Prefecture, two significant players, Ikoma City and Trust Bank's Furusato Choice, are initiating an innovative government crowdfunding project. Starting on November 21, 2025, this initiative aims to support three new businesses proposed by budding entrepreneurs by utilizing vacant properties in the area right next to Ikoma Station.

Background of the Crowdfunding Effort

Historically a bustling hub, the south side of Ikoma Station has faced challenges with an increasing number of vacant homes and storefronts, leading to a decline in local vibrancy. However, there is a silver lining as new businesses have started sprouting up in recent times, signaling a shift towards a more dynamic future.

To enhance community engagement and facilitate the opening of new businesses, Ikoma City launched the “Ikomina Challenge” in June 2025. Aimed at connecting experienced mentors with aspiring entrepreneurs, the program allows the candidates to refine their business plans through mentoring and test marketing. After thorough screenings, three promising new ventures were selected to benefit from the crowdfunding platform, which encompasses a dedication to funneling donations directly to the business support initiatives, excluding operational costs such as thank-you gifts.

Allocation of Funds

The funds raised through this crowdfunding effort will be allocated towards renovating the selected vacant stores to prepare them for business operations. This includes essential costs such as interior repairs, kitchen installations, restroom upgrades, and various sanitary and air conditioning enhancements.

Ikoma Mayor Masashi Komurasaki voiced his enthusiastic support for this initiative, stating, “Ikoma City is committed to promoting diverse work styles and economic circulation within the region. We wholeheartedly support those who are set to make new challenges in the Ikomina area, which serves as the city’s gateway. The projects, whether they are an art gallery offering enriching experiences, a spice curry venture to create communal bonds, or a child-friendly hair salon and café, come from a collection of dedicated individuals, including property owners, mentors, and community members. We believe these heartfelt endeavors will inject a new charm into the Ikomina area. We sincerely ask for everyone's support to ensure the success of this crowdfunding initiative, which will pave the way for a vibrant future in the area.”

Ikoma City and the Ikomina Area

Ikoma City is strategically located with excellent transportation links to central Osaka and has been developing as a residential city surrounded by rich natural landscapes. The Ikoma Station area handles around 40,000 passengers daily and features an array of large commercial and public facilities. Conversely, the Ikomina area has historically been a commercial district catering to visitors of the revered Hozyan Temple, yet it has seen dwindling vitality in recent years due to increasing vacancies.

To counter these challenges and uplift the community's spirit, Ikoma City, alongside local residents, businesses, and universities, is spearheading several initiatives, including the Ikomina Challenge and urban development plans such as beautification projects around the station. This represents a collaborative effort to create a sustainable and thriving community.

What is Government Crowdfunding?

Established in September 2013, Trust Bank's Government Crowdfunding combines crowdfunding with hometown tax incentives to address local issues. This model allows municipalities to act as project owners, laying out concrete solutions, specifying needed funding, and sharing the crowdfunding timeline while donors can choose how their contributions are utilized. It was awarded the Good Design Award in 2019.

Trust Bank has not only led the pioneering steps in this sector by launching Japan's first comprehensive hometown tax site, Furusato Choice, but has also expanded into various related businesses and services, aiming to establish self-sustainable regions.
