Novelis Inc. and the Regeneration of Torre Seta in Milan
In a significant advancement for urban regeneration, Novelis Inc. is making headlines with its crucial role in the revitalization of Torre Seta, a landmark project in Milan. This redevelopment follows a devastating fire in August 2021, which damaged the original structure and prompted a full refurbishment beginning in late 2024. Rather than opting for demolition, the approach focuses on preserving the building's sturdy reinforced concrete core while introducing a modern façade that merges aesthetic appeal with performance. The project is on schedule for completion in mid-2026.
Low-Carbon Construction at Its Best
Laura Basile, Director of Operations for Novelis in Italy, highlights Torre Seta as the epitome of low-carbon urban renewal. The new design aims to enhance fire safety while prioritizing recyclability and design flexibility. To align with these goals, Novelis supplied 35 tons of aluminum alloy consisting of 90% recycled materials, emphasizing the commitment to environmental sustainability. This innovative alloy, produced at Novelis' Pieve Emanuele plant in Italy, boasts a remarkably low carbon footprint, reinforcing the project's green credentials.
Giuseppe Enea, project manager at Studio Marco Piva, the architectural firm behind the makeover, expressed how the fire incident transformed their approach. He noted that retaining the existing structure provides a platform for resilience and superior material performance. The use of Novelis' low-carbon aluminum enables a blend of sustainability and advanced façade engineering, ensuring both durability and fire safety in the design.
Aesthetic Innovation and Environmental Responsibility
The façade design integrates liquid-coated, folded aluminum panels, which are not only aesthetically pleasing but also fully recyclable at the end of their life cycle. This careful selection minimizes environmental impact while promoting long-term sustainability. The result is an architectural skin that captures the essence of responsibility towards the environment coupled with structural endurance.
The aluminum panels supplied in Super Windy® pre-painted coils are engineered for versatility and durability, marking a significant advancement in building materials. With superior bending properties and paint elasticity to prevent cracking, they offer unmatched resistance to harsh environmental conditions.
Fire Safety Meets Modern Design
One of the standout features of the Torre Seta refurbishment is the integration of fire safety measures. The aluminum panels are classified as non-combustible under EN 1350112018, ensuring compliance with the highest fire safety standards. Along with these technical enhancements, the liquid-coated and press-folded aluminum panels provide a unique architectural expression that seamlessly marries modern aesthetics with long-lasting durability, significantly reshaping the building's visual identity.
