Discovering the Beauty of Gunma Prefecture with Starbucks
Starting October 1, 2026, Starbucks Coffee Japan will kick off a brand-new coffee seminar titled "Minakami no Mori to Coffee“ (Minakami Forest and Coffee) at various locations across Gunma Prefecture. This exciting initiative is set to not only enrich the coffee experience for attendees but also shed light on the environmental collaborations taking place in the region.
The Forest Starbucks Project: A Community-Centric Approach
In 2025, Starbucks formed a partnership with Minakami Town by signing a collaborative agreement focused on nurturing the precious forests that form the headwaters of the Tone River. Since then, Starbucks employees, referred to as partners, have actively participated in forest maintenance efforts in collaboration with the Minakami Forest Utilization Council and local high school students from Tone Technical High School's Green Life program. So far, over 600 individuals have participated, laying the groundwork for the Forest Starbucks Project, which officially began in July 2026.
The major goals of the Forest Starbucks Project include actively utilizing previously underused thinning materials and providing environmental education for employees through forest preservation activities. By combining these initiatives, Starbucks aims to educate its partners about the importance of environmental sustainability while fulfilling their commitment to quality coffee sourced from nature's bounty.
The significance of environmental sustainability is paramount, especially as climate change poses challenges to coffee cultivation. It is predicted that by 2050, suitable land for growing Arabica coffee, which accounts for about 60 percent of global coffee production, will be reduced by half.
A Unique Coffee Seminar Experience
At the Minakami seminar, participants will engage in discussions surrounding water—a crucial element in coffee brewing—highlighting its significance in producing high-quality coffee. Local partners involved in forest maintenance will share their insights into preserving the region's natural resources and how they contribute to the flavor of the coffee derived from Minakami Town's water sources.
This interactive 60-minute seminar promises to offer participants an enriching experience, cementing their connection to nature while enjoying coffee brewed from the very water they learn about.
A Legacy of Coffee Education
Since 2002, Starbucks has held approximately 7,000 coffee seminars across stores nationwide, underlining its commitment to coffee culture. These sessions are led by certified Coffee Masters who share their expertise and passion with attendees, enhancing their appreciation for coffee. The seminars cater to varied interests, whether you are a newcomer to coffee or seeking to deepen your understanding of its nuances.
Starbucks has always emphasized strong ties within the community, utilizing the rich insights and stories learned from local residents to shape its programs. With the Minakami seminar, Starbucks aims to not only highlight regional uniqueness but also create a communal experience that resonates with participants.
