Exploring Japan's Sacred Routes: A New Approach to Travel with Leading Transportation Firms
Japan's New Initiative for Sacred Pilgrimage Travel
Japan is embarking on a revolutionary journey to transform travel experiences, combining ancient pilgrimage routes with modern transport solutions. In a groundbreaking collaboration, four of the nation's significant transportation companies—East Japan Railway Company (JR East), Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central), West Japan Railway Company (JR West), and Shikoku Railway Company (JR Shikoku)—along with Japan Airlines (JAL), have come together to introduce a new initiative aimed at international travelers seeking deeper, more meaningful experiences. This initiative seeks to connect the beautiful and historic pilgrimage routes of Japan with contemporary travel methods, focusing on nature, spirituality, and personal reflection rather than mere sightseeing.
The Journey Through Sacred Landscapes
By connecting Dewa Sanzan, Kumano Kodo, and Shikoku Henro—three of Japan's most revered pilgrimage regions—these transport giants are enhancing accessibility for travelers. Dewa Sanzan, known for its three sacred mountains that symbolize rebirth, allows visitors to engage in journey-focused travel through hiking and reflection. The Kumano Kodo is a UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage route, and Shikoku Henro connects 88 temples in a circular path, allowing travelers to explore Japanese culture on foot.
This initiative encourages visitors to engage deeply with the landscapes, the communal spirit, and the local culture, moving away from rushing between sightseeing spots. Instead, visitors are urged to immerse themselves in the regions’ stunning natural views and spiritual heritage as they embark on their pilgrimages. The transportation system is designed not only to facilitate travel but also to create an experience that allows passengers to enjoy the journey itself, thanks to the innovative Joyful Train services operated by JR East.
Responding to Global Travel Trends
As Japan welcomes record numbers of international visitors—over 42.6 million in 2025—the need for differentiated travel experiences is greater than ever. With wellness tourism projected to reach a staggering $894 billion market in 2024, this initiative capitalizes on a growing trend towards health and spirituality in travel. According to Akako Tsutsumiguchi, Division Senior Manager at JR East, the pilgrimage routes provide opportunities for travelers to reflect, discover, and reconnect with their own personal journeys while enjoying diverse landscapes and local communities.
Creating Sustainable Tourism
Most significantly, this initiative addresses the challenges of overtourism, often experienced in Japan's high-traffic urban centers. By promoting smaller communities and less-visited regions, the program strives to disperse visitors across the country, fostering sustainable tourism practices. The integration of transportation options with authentic local experiences ensures that travelers interact with the culture, contributing to and supporting these smaller communities.
A Sustainable Future for Travel
Long-term, this model is envisioned as a template for sustainable inbound tourism, blending wellness and cultural appreciation with responsible travel practices. It aims to connect visitors with the essence of Japan, ultimately motivating them to return for further exploration and deeper engagement with the rich tapestry of experiences available throughout the country.
From mountainous trails to ancient temples, the new initiative offers international tourists a holistic journey through Japan’s sacred landscapes, proving that travel can be a path to well-being and connection with both oneself and the world around us.
