Experience the Exciting Sake Tasting Showdown in Tokyo's Nishi-Ogikubo and Kichijoji
As winter chills the air, a warm and inviting event awaits in Tokyo's charming neighborhoods of Nishi-Ogikubo and Kichijoji. From November 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026, the
Sake Tasting Showdown will kick off, celebrating local izakayas and their specialties. This culinary event is brought to you by the Suginami Ward Office and the Musashino City Tourism Organization as part of the
Chuo Line Aru Aru Project, which aims to showcase the unique attractions of the Chuo Line.
What to Expect
The Sake Tasting Showdown features a fierce contest among
16 carefully selected izakayas, split between the two neighborhoods. Each izakaya will present their signature dish across 8 different genres, allowing attendees to vote for their favorites. The theme of the event draws inspiration from sumo wrestling, with izakaya owners dressed as sumo wrestlers, adding a playful twist to this gastronomic challenge.
Guests are invited to participate by enjoying food and drink valued at
1,500 yen or more at any of the participating izakayas. By filling out a brief survey after their meal, diners can cast their votes for their preferred izakaya and stand a chance to win prizes!
Prizes and Voting Process
Participants will not only contribute to the ultimate decision of which area reigns supreme, but they'll also receive exciting souvenirs:
- - A sumo wrestler-themed sticker featuring the likeness of their favorite izakaya owner, or
- - A food sticker if they bring their sumo sticker to the competing izakayas.
Additionally, if voters pick a winning izakaya, they receive a
2,000 yen coupon on-site. Each izakaya will have a voting box where patrons can drop their completed ballots. The izakaya that garners the most votes will take home the title of overall champion, earning its owners a limited edition acrylic keychain featuring an original sumo wrestler design.
