Exciting Opportunities for Buddhist Studies Scholars

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) has recently announced a call for applications for two significant initiatives: the Buddhism Public Scholars Program and the New Professorships in Buddhist Studies. These opportunities, generously funded by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Global, aim to support emerging scholars and expand teaching in Buddhist Studies worldwide.

Buddhism Public Scholars Program

The Buddhism Public Scholars program aims to engage early-career scholars of Buddhism in professional roles within various organizations that are dedicated to the presentation and interpretation of Buddhist traditions. This year, ACLS has partnered with two prominent host institutions: Lion's Roar in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and The Courtauld Institute of Art in London, UK.

Selected scholars will secure one-year placements during which they will contribute valuable academic expertise to museums, publishers, and other institutions that showcase Buddhist art and philosophy. Up to five scholars will be chosen for this invaluable opportunity, which not only facilitates professional growth but also enhances the visibility and understanding of Buddhism in contemporary society.

Successful applicants will receive a stipend, funding for professional development, research expenses, and a relocation allowance, where applicable. To apply, candidates must possess a PhD in humanities or social sciences, awarded between September 1, 2020, and June 30, 2026, and hold appropriate work authorization in the host country. Notably, neither the ACLS nor the host institutions will provide visa sponsorship.

Informational Webinars

ACLS will be hosting two informational webinars aimed at potential applicants. These sessions will provide an overview of the hosting organizations, job descriptions, eligibility requirements, and the criteria for evaluation. Interested candidates can participate in these sessions to gather insights before submitting their applications:

New Professorships in Buddhist Studies

In addition to the public scholar positions, ACLS is also offering New Professorships in Buddhist Studies. This initiative provides multi-year grants for colleges and universities that are keen to establish or expand their teaching of Buddhism. Institutions around the globe are eligible to apply for grants worth up to $300,000, which can be utilized over a span of four years. This funding is specifically aimed at enriching the academic landscape and promoting the study of Buddhism within higher education.

The ACLS, with a legacy stretching back a century, comprises a federation of 81 scholarly organizations and is a leading voice in American humanities and social sciences scholarship. It champions knowledge as a public good and strives to advance the diversity of experience and identity within scholarship through partnerships with institutions and individuals.
