LCA Intensifies Efforts to Uncover Animal Cruelty in Italian Pig Farms
Last Chance for Animals (LCA) is amplifying its campaign against animal cruelty by shedding light on the horrific conditions faced by pigs on farms supplying Prosciutto di Parma. Following an investigation that garnered significant media attention in early December 2024, LCA has released new video evidence exposing the inhumane treatment of pigs. This footage, recorded between April and November 2024, reveals disturbing conditions at farms owned by Elio Martinelli, the head of the Italian Pig Farmers Association (Assosuini).
Despite mounting evidence, representatives from the pig farming industry attempted to minimize the severity of the situation. In response, Assosuini criticized LCA’s investigation, labeling it as "animal rights propaganda" and claiming that the footage was outdated and manipulated. LCA has since refuted these claims by providing verification of the video evidence through GPS data and dated newspaper clippings, establishing its authenticity and recent filming.
The Consortium of Prosciutto di Parma also attempted to distance itself from the implicated farms, stating that they do not contribute directly to Prosciutto di Parma production. However, LCA's findings, which include identifiable "Parma Ham" tattoos on the pigs, firmly connect these farms to the production of the famous Italian delicacy.
In response to industry pushback, LCA has escalated its actions by filing a legal complaint with the Public Prosecutor's Office in Mantua. This complaint highlights the grievous living conditions and cruelty experienced by the animals, thus reinforcing LCA's commitment to seeking justice and accountability in this matter. Chris DeRose, the founder and president of LCA, stated, "The footage speaks for itself—there is no escaping the truth of the horrific conditions that these pigs are subjected to."
Furthermore, LCA has urged retailers to cease the sale of Prosciutto di Parma products. DeRose emphasized, "Consumers deserve to know the truth about where their food comes from and the suffering it entails."
