KTG Strengthens Collaboration with Uzbek Technical Regulation Agency for Future Growth

In a strategic meeting held on December 5, 2024, members of the executive board from the KT&G Representative Office in Uzbekistan convened with key officials from the Uzbek Agency for Technical Regulation. The focus of the meeting was to explore avenues for deepening cooperation regarding local technical regulations. This initiative highlights KT&G's commitment to adapt to new regulatory frameworks as Uzbekistan progresses toward World Trade Organization (WTO) membership.

The board representatives included Eun Soo Jang, the head of KT&G's Uzbekistan office, along with Jong Yub Lee, the Regional Director of the Eurasian headquarters. From the Uzbek side, Tohirov Odiljon, Deputy Director of UzStandard, and Madumarov Farrux, Deputy Director of UzTest represented the government agency. The session was a platform for discussing collaborative efforts aimed at reinforcing product certification processes and advancing technical regulations in line with international standards.

During the discussions, they emphasized the need for preemptive measures to address potential future regulatory changes, particularly those compliant with WTO conditions. As Uzbekistan works to amend its regulations and institutions in preparation for WTO membership, the partnership with KT&G stands vital. The Uzbek Agency for Technical Regulation operates under the Cabinet of the Republic of Uzbekistan, focusing on establishing and modifying safety standards for products and developing a robust testing infrastructure to support local manufacturers.

KT&G, recognized for its popular ESSE brand, is a significant player in the Korean tobacco industry and the market leader in combustible cigarettes, next-generation products, and health-functional foods. Operating across 143 countries with over 5,000 employees, KT&G's influence extends beyond Korea into the Eurasia region. The company's engagement in Uzbekistan is particularly noteworthy, as it underscores its role in revitalizing local economies through cooperation with indigenous organizations. This partnership aligns with KT&G's strategy of ensuring product quality compliance with local regulations and international standards.

As Uzbekistan positions itself within the international trade framework, the collaboration between KT&G and its Uzbek partners may serve as a model for other businesses aiming to adapt to a continuously evolving regulatory landscape. This meeting not only reinforces KTG’s commitment to compliance and quality assurance but also enhances the understanding of local regulatory requirements, paving the way for smoother operations in the region.

Overall, this strategic dialogue signifies KT&G's proactive stance on the global stage, assuring local stakeholders of its dedication to supporting economic growth and adhering to best practices in regulation. It reflects the shared vision of both entities to assimilate modern regulatory practices while ensuring product safety and compliance standards are upheld for the benefit of consumers. With further collaborative efforts anticipated, the joint ventures may lead to enhanced market conditions and bolster Uzbekistan's competitive edge in the international marketplace.
