Tokyo Metro's Innovative Pilot Program with SQ-2 Security Robot
In a groundbreaking initiative, SEQSENSE Corporation, together with Tokyo Metro and Nishiyama Co., has embarked on a pilot program to test the
SQ-2, an advanced autonomous security robot, at
Gaienmae Station. This pilot program aims to enhance safety, especially with the upcoming
Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships, which is set to attract numerous visitors at the National Stadium.
Details of the Pilot Program
Duration and Location
- - Duration: From September 8, 2025, to September 23, 2025.
- - Location: Tokyo Metro, Gaienmae Station, 2-7-16, Kita-Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo.
Objectives
The initiative responds to the anticipated labor shortages due to Japan's declining workforce. The pilot aims to explore the effectiveness of using SQ-2 for enhanced security and smooth navigation for visitors during the major sporting event.
Features of SQ-2
1.
Security Surveillance: Equipped with a 360-degree camera, microphone, and speaker, SQ-2 will patrol and monitor the station area. Its surveillance capabilities include announcements meant to deter crime and gather situational awareness through mobile monitoring.
SQ-2 stationed near the entrance of the Ichou tree-lined area.
2.
Information and Guidance: The SQ-2’s sound announcement function and electronic display will be employed to relay important information about security and directions to the nearest entrance for the National Stadium, ensuring effective communication with visitors.
3.
Efficiency Testing: Leveraging its various built-in features, the pilot will also test what additional tasks SQ-2 can streamline to further enhance operational efficiency in security management.
Background on SQ-2 Security Robots
Launched in 2019, the
SQ-2 series has rapidly expanded its presence across Japan, gathering a wealth of experience in security environments. Thanks to its cutting-edge technologies, including 3D sensor capabilities, self-localization algorithms, and real-time path planning, SQ-2 is capable of sophisticated autonomous movement. The robot's unique
3D LiDAR system allows it to create detailed 3D maps of monitored areas, detect moving objects such as pedestrians, and respond to changes in the environment.
By taking over fundamental security tasks like patrolling and assisting visitors, SQ-2 is designed to significantly reduce facility management costs while enhancing security levels through its advanced detection features.
