Bell Canada Unveils Grand Expansion of AI Data Centre Network in Saskatchewan

In a bold move towards bolstering Canada's role in the artificial intelligence landscape, Bell Canada has announced a transformative project: the construction of a state-of-the-art 300 MW data centre in the Rural Municipality of Sherwood, just outside Regina, Saskatchewan. This significant investment represents Bell Canada's largest commitment in Saskatchewan to date, symbolizing the province’s pivotal role in advancing Canada's AI economy.

A Major Investment for the Future

The partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan is designed not only to enhance Bell’s AI capabilities but also to substantially increase Canada’s computing capacity. The new data centre is expected to deliver substantial economic value, anticipated to soar to an estimated $12 billion for the province. This sum will materialize through job creation, tax revenues, and overall economic diversification.

Upon completion, which is set to unfold in stages starting from 2027, the facility is projected to generate at least 800 jobs during construction, along with a minimum of 80 full-time roles once fully operational. Furthermore, research indicates that this large-scale data centre could indirectly create up to 750 additional jobs within the community, underscoring the project’s potential impact on local employment.

Strengthening Canada's AI Ecosystem

A crucial aspect of the facility is its commitment to deliver sovereign AI computing tools to government bodies, researchers, and enterprises, ensuring data's persistent residency within Canada. To enhance operational capabilities, this centre will connect to Bell’s national fibre network through a collaboration with SaskTel, establishing a unified channel for delivering AI-powered services and solutions to clients in the region.

Cerebras and CoreWeave have been secured as tenants to provide innovative compute solutions at the facility. Cerebras is expected to enable large-scale AI training and inference through their unique wafer-scale technology, while CoreWeave will supply cutting-edge, scalable AI computing options utilizing NVIDIA GPUs.

Community Engagement and Environmental Impact

Bell also emphasizes its commitment to community engagement through strategic partnerships targeting Saskatchewan's educational institutions and Indigenous communities. The collaboration aims to enhance regional research potential and provide opportunities for student engagement, particularly with institutions like Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the University of Regina. Notably, Bell aims to work closely with the George Gordon First Nation, focusing on Indigenous procurement and workforce development to ensure mutual benefits are sustained throughout the project's lifecycle.

Environmentally, the centre will employ innovative closed-loop cooling systems, which do not rely on the municipality's water resources. Furthermore, there are plans for a district energy system, facilitating waste heat reuse in local developments, reinforcing Bell's commitment to sustainability.
