Community Unites for Dalton State Student Ximena Arias After Misguided ICE Arrest
Community Stands by Ximena Arias
In a heart-wrenching and compelling display of solidarity, the community of Dalton, Georgia has rallied behind Ximena Arias, a 19-year-old student at Dalton State College, following her recent arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Her arrest took place after a traffic stop that has since been classified as a mistake. This event has ignited a wave of support for not only Ximena but also for a broader conversation regarding immigration legislation.
Ximena's story began when she arrived in the U.S. at just four years old, having lived in Georgia for over 15 years. She's been an active member of her church and is known for her involvement within the community, largely regarded as a model citizen.
Ximena’s family has been vocal about their heartache since the arrest. Her mother stated, "Every time we hear her voice, we are filled with gratitude. All we want is to bring her back home." The family's determination is evident, as they have spearheaded efforts to garner support for Ximena, who pays out-of-state tuition for her education.
The circumstances surrounding Ximena's arrest have raised ongoing concerns about enforcement practices and their implications for those with strong community ties. Ximena stands as a representative of countless young individuals who struggle with the absence of pathways to permanent residency, especially after the closure of new DACA applications by the previous administration in 2017.
Her family remarked on the significance of their daughter’s situation: "Ximena is not a threat or a flight risk. She is a neighbor, a daughter, and a student shaping our community's future. We are proud of the support we're receiving from our community."
With the help of legal support, her family remains optimistic about her release on bond, with a GoFundMe campaign already raising over $60,000 for her legal expenses, which could amount to tens of thousands of dollars.
Footage from the incident, now released by the Dalton Police Department, corroborated that no traffic violation had occurred, further emphasizing the injustice of her detainment. "I am not angry about what happened; I appreciate the Dalton Police Department for admitting their mistake. My family always reminds me that I have a purpose, and I hope that part of that purpose is to drive awareness for the need for immigration reform," Ximena stated.
After her arrest, she was booked into the Whitfield County Jail before being transferred to the Stewart Detention Center in accordance with federal law — a transition described by her family as traumatic and isolating.
A System Under Pressure
Ximena's immigration attorney, Charles Kuck, argued that her case is just one example among many.
"Holding non-violent individuals like Ximena only clogs the local systems and causes unnecessary costs while tearing families apart," he explained. He also pointed out the lack of immediate remedy under the current immigration laws, reiterating that systemic changes are overdue. "It's been over 35 years since Congress has modernized immigration laws, and Ximena is a testament to the consequences of inaction. We advocate for her release and for a future where cases like hers are processed with compassion and common sense."
A Call for Community Action
The rising support for Ximena has catalyzed calls for action within the community. Residents and supporters have been encouraged to engage in the following ways:
1. Drive Safely: Remind friends and family how minor traffic stops can lead to serious repercussions.
2. Support Legal Advocacy: Contributions to local organizations like CLILA (Coalition of Latino Leaders) and the Latin American Association (LAA) can make a significant difference.
3. Contact Your Representatives: Advocating for bipartisan immigration reform is vital. Engage with local lawmakers and ask, "What efforts are they taking to prevent long-term residents from being detained for minor infractions?"
Through this ordeal, Ximena’s family holds onto hope for a joyful reunion. Her mother articulates their faith in the legal system, while expressing a desire for compassion in such critical matters: "Dalton is our home, and we are grateful to belong to a community demonstrating immense love and support."
