'Latent Perception': An Exhibition of Unique Visions
The GALLERY ROOM・A will host the dual exhibition 'Latent Perception' by artists Ai Nariyama and Hitomo Endo from February 14 to March 15, 2026. Organized by The Chain Museum's ArtSticker commercial gallery, this exhibition delves into the artists' interpretations of perception, questioning how images materialize and how they can be perceived in uncertain states.
Exhibition Overview
This exhibition poses intriguing questions regarding the nature of imagery—how it surfaces and how it can be perceived ambiguously. Ai Nariyama’s work draws from the fleeting, imprecise memories that linger after viewing a multitude of images through social media and digital media. Her paintings often reflect hazy forms, leading viewers on a visual journey as they search for clarity amidst uncertainty. The fluidity of her work invites the audience to engage in an exploration of perception where the act of looking itself becomes dynamic.
In contrast, Hitomo Endo engages with the tradition of landscape painting to explore layers of dreams, memories, and time. Rather than merely reproducing the external world, her art creates a depth of perception that eludes singular interpretation. The delicate color palettes and multilayered structures present in her paintings evoke the tension of emotions and the passage of time, creating a space where multiple interpretations coexist harmoniously.
Artistic Statements
Both artists challenge the conventional definitions of abstraction and representation. Nariyama captures the fuzziness of internalized memories, using tangible paint to create what she terms an 'unsettled canvas.' She aims to express not a definitive image but rather the state of searching and finding meaning in uncertainty. Endo, on the other hand, layers elements of time and feeling to depict a perception that is fluid and ever-shifting, resonating with viewers who engage with her work.
The exhibition aims to empower attendees to experience perception as a developing process rather than a static understanding, making them active participants in the creation of meaning through their own memories and sensations.
