Stan Polovets Visits Cuba to Honor Resilient Jewish Community in Havana

This week, Stan Polovets, the Co-founder and Chairman of The Genesis Prize Foundation, embarked on a notable journey to Havana, Cuba. His mission was to meet with prominent figures of the Cuban Jewish community, including Hella Askenazi, who serves as the Vice President of both the community and the Beth Shalom Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Cuba. His visit comes at a crucial time, highlighting the commitment of the Genesis Prize Foundation to bolster Jewish life across Latin America, especially amidst the pervasive economic difficulties that have been afflicting the island for years.

The gathering took place under challenging circumstances, as the meeting in the synagogue was held in near-complete darkness due to persistent rolling blackouts. Attendees relied on the light from mobile phones to facilitate discussions, emphasizing the community’s resilience and adaptation in the face of adversity. Polovets expressed his deep admiration for this small yet proud community, which comprises fewer than a thousand members. He remarked, “The resilience of this small but proud community is deeply inspiring. Despite immense problems caused by economic mismanagement by the Communist government – exacerbated by the U.S. embargo imposed over 60 years ago – the Jewish identity of Cuban Jews shines brightly, and quite literally, in the dark.”

During his visit, Polovets noted the unusual vibrancy of religious life within the island, contrasting sharply with experiences from visits to Jewish communities around the globe. In a striking observation, he pointed out, “Unlike every other Jewish community I've visited worldwide – including in the United States – there are no guards in front of the synagogue.” His remarks attest to a unique environment where antisemitism appears significantly lower compared to other regions.

Polovets also emphasized the Genesis Prize Foundation's dedication to nurturing relationships between Latin American nations and Israel. This commitment is further underscored by the selection of Argentine President Javier Milei as the 2025 Genesis Prize laureate. He highlighted President Milei’s advocacy for the Jewish people and the State of Israel, particularly noting his actions toward relocating Argentina's embassy to Jerusalem. “His commitment to moving Argentina's embassy to Jerusalem, his determination to bring to justice those responsible for the AMIA and Israeli Embassy bombings, and a reversal of votes in the United Nations from anti-Israel to pro-Israel represent a historic shift in Latin American leadership,” Polovets asserted. He expressed a desire to see other Latin American countries emulate President Milei’s stance.

The visit further showcased the courage of Cuban Jews, who have prominently voiced their support for Israel, defying the reluctance observed in various Jewish organizations in the region. Following a condemnation from Cuban authorities regarding the October 7 attacks, the Cuban Jewish community notably criticized the government's stance, asserting, “Justifying [Hamas'] reprehensible acts of crime and savagery' [on October 7] is unacceptable.” This courageous stand is a testament to the community’s unwavering commitment to their values and identity.

The history of Jewish presence in Cuba is extensive, tracing back to the 16th century when conversos arrived with Spanish explorers. The community thrived in the 20th century, peaking at over 15,000 members before a mass exodus in the wake of the 1959 Revolution. Today, the remaining Jewish community battles for survival, relying heavily on global support from entities like the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC).

In addressing the current situation, Polovets remarked, “The Genesis Prize Foundation recognizes the incredible perseverance of Cuban Jewry. Their story is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Jewish people. It is important that private foundations and donors join the JDC in ensuring the survival of this resilient and unique community.”

Stan Polovets stands as a significant figure in the global business landscape and philanthropy. He is not only the Cofounder and Chairman of the Genesis Prize Foundation but also a dedicated advocate for strengthening Jewish identity worldwide and uplifting communities in need.
