VITAS® Healthcare Offers Free Grief Helpline for Father's Day Support

Father's Day Grief Helpline by VITAS Healthcare

Father's Day can be a bittersweet occasion for countless Americans, transforming a day meant for celebration into one filled with reminiscence and sorrow. In a poignant reflection of this sentiment, more than 20,000 patients under the care of VITAS Healthcare's hospice services were fathers last year, representing a significant number of families facing the daunting challenge of grief this month. To lend a hand during such a difficult time, VITAS Healthcare is offering a free, confidential helpline on June 21, dedicated solely to those grappling with loss.

Support Through Grief

On Father's Day, the VITAS Father's Day Grief Helpline will be active from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET (5 a.m. to 8 p.m. PT), providing immediate access to trained bereavement specialists who understand how the holiday can heighten feelings of grief. Individuals can reach out for support at the toll-free number 844.218.4827.

The helpline aims to remind those in mourning that they need not navigate their feelings alone. The presence of experienced professionals can offer both comfort and practical strategies for coping, addressing the complex emotions that often surface during holidays.

The Importance of Connection

Jason Cooper, the national spiritual services lead for VITAS, expresses that "Father's Day can be one of the hardest days of the year, even when everything around suggests it should feel celebratory." Many individuals feel undue pressure to suppress their emotions, particularly men who might have been taught to keep their feelings to themselves. However, it's critical to acknowledge that grief does not simply fade by avoiding discussions about it. The helpline serves as a reminder that reaching out for support is a vital step.

Grief is a unique experience for everyone, and special occasions can often amplify emotions. Father’s Day may be particularly challenging for several groups: children mourning their fathers, fathers grieving for lost children, those caring for aging parents, and individuals dealing with complex family dynamics.

Commitment to Caring

The VITAS Father's Day Grief Helpline is part of the organization's broader dedication to holistic care, which prioritizes emotional and spiritual needs alongside physical well-being. Throughout the year, VITAS offers various bereavement services that include:
  • - Home visits from specialists and volunteers
  • - Bereavement telephone support
  • - Grief support groups facilitated by VITAS staff
  • - Memorial services and commemorative items
  • - Educational resources and newsletters
  • - Referrals to community therapists and local grief resources

In addition to the helpline, VITAS grief specialists will host a virtual support session titled "A Season of Remembrance" on June 11 and 12. These free sessions, conducted over Zoom, offer a safe environment for participants to share memories, engage with music and storytelling, and connect with others who are also experiencing loss.
