European Offshore Gas Industry Achieves Significant Milestone with First Methane Certified Project

European Offshore Gas Industry Reaches New Milestone

The European offshore gas sector has made a significant leap towards sustainable energy with the introduction of the N05-A gas project. Operated by the Dutch exploration and production company ONE-Dyas, this project has become the first natural gas production initiative in the North Sea to receive an independent 'Grade A' certification for methane emissions, as per MiQ standards.

The N05-A project represents not only an environmental triumph but also a pioneering move in the offshore energy industry. Completely powered by renewable electricity sourced from the Riffgat offshore wind farm, the N05-A installation stands as a testament to how innovative energy solutions can be integrated into traditional sectors. By eliminating combustion-based energy generation, the project significantly reduces operational greenhouse gas emissions to nearly zero.

A Landmark Certification

Achieving the MiQ Grade A certification required a rigorous independent audit of N05-A's operational practices and methane emission data conducted by Intertek, a global leader in quality assurance. This certification sets a new benchmark for low-emission gas production in Europe, driving compliance and transparency in the energy sector.

MiQ's comprehensive and data-driven rating system for natural gas is designed to encourage continuous improvement and ensure accountability regarding methane emissions across the supply chain. The auditing process verified the project's emission data and the systems enacted for methane management as part of MiQ's stringent criteria.

Collaborations Driving Change

The N05-A project has already garnered interest from industry giants such as bp, ExxonMobil, Repsol, and EQT in the U.S. market, agreeing to purchase this high-certification gas. With bp set to market the gas produced by ONE-Dyas, large-scale buyers, including utility and industrial companies, stand to benefit from a clean, reliable energy source.

Moreover, the N05-A facility is the first gas installation in the Dutch and German North Sea to operate entirely on renewable electricity. This transition reflects an essential step forward in energy independence, combining national energy security with climate responsibility. The leadership from ONE-Dyas underscores a broader commitment to sustainable practices that can coexist with economic viability.

Industry Leaders Speak Out

Georges Tijbosch, CEO of MiQ, emphasized the significance of the N05-A certification by stating, "This showcases how innovative design and best operational practices can lead to substantial methane emission reductions. The rigorous MiQ independent assessments provide reliable data to governments, regulatory bodies, and end-users, which supports accountability and ongoing improvements across the energy sector."

Chris de Ruyter van Steveninck, CEO of ONE-Dyas, remarked, "With the N05-A, we not only offer a certification of the highest standard but also provide our clients with a verifiable guarantee that this gas is produced with exceptionally low emissions. The self-elevating mobile platform powered by renewable energy ensures electrified drilling operations. Combining innovative design with green energy from the Riffgat wind farm, we exhibit that national energy security and climate responsibility can go hand in hand. This certified gas represents the future of cleaner, more responsible gas production in the energy transition."

A Bright Future for Renewable Energy

The N05-A project forms part of the GEMS area in the North Sea, which holds up to 50 billion cubic meters of potential natural gas from the Netherlands and Germany. By upholding the rigorous standards of MiQ certification, ONE-Dyas assures customers in both countries that they can procure natural gas with complete confidence in its low-methane credentials.

This innovative project is more than just a step toward sustainable energy; it sets a precedent for the future of the gas industry in Europe. By embracing renewable energy sources and committing to transparency in emissions reporting, the N05-A project could serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives across the continent.
