Launch of the Declaration on Longevity and Precision Medicine
A significant milestone was reached during the Abu Dhabi Global Health Week (ADGHW) with the introduction of a revolutionary "Declaration on Longevity and Precision Medicine." This initiative, a first of its kind, seeks to create frameworks for advancing precision medicine and longevity science globally.
The declaration emphasizes the crucial link between longevity and the establishment of healthy communities. During the launch, His Excellency Mansoor Ibrahim Al Mansoori, the President of the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, stated that healthy populations lead to prosperous communities and stronger social cohesion, thereby stimulating economic growth. This declaration unites leaders worldwide to leverage emerging technologies responsibly and to deliver the advantages of precision medicine universally.
Urgent Needs in Healthcare
With the global life expectancy disparity growing—currently nearly a decade—the declaration aims to accelerate the adoption of personalized care and research into healthy longevity. The timing is critical, especially considering the World Health Organization's projections that the global population aged 60 and above will double to 2.1 billion by 2050. Furthermore, the precision medicine market is expected to surge from $81 billion in 2023 to over $175 billion by 2030.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is positioning itself as a leader in the field of longevity, thanks to innovative regulatory frameworks, investments in precision medicine, and pioneering initiatives like the world's first accredited Healthy Longevity Medicine Centre. This burgeoning sector is projected to grow from $19 billion in 2020 to $32 billion by 2026.
Principles for Advancement
The declaration outlines ambitious commitments to advance the science of longevity through AI-driven diagnostics and personalized treatments. It defines six essential pillars: enhancing research and innovation, strengthening collaboration and knowledge-sharing, investing in education and workforce development, advocating for favorable policies and regulations, promoting ethical practices, and raising public awareness regarding longevity research and its health implications.
Noteworthy signatories at the ADGHW, who formalized their commitment under the auspices of the Department of Health, include prestigious organizations such as M42, Masdar City, PureHealth, Illumina, NYU Abu Dhabi, the University of Pennsylvania, Aldar Properties, Children's National Hospital, Burjeel Medical City, and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, among others.
Global Vision and Collective Action
PwC Middle East, a strategic partner in this initiative, affirmed the declaration's global importance in advancing worldwide healthcare priorities. Lina Shadid, Health Industries Leader at PwC Middle East, emphasized that the declaration provides a blueprint for integrating AI, genomics, and precision healthcare within standard medical practices to accelerate the adoption of life-transforming medical innovations worldwide.
This declaration demonstrates Abu Dhabi's ongoing commitment to shaping the future of health through knowledge sharing, research investment, and the integration of emerging technologies. By uniting experts and institutions globally, the Department of Health is ushering in a new era of precision medicine that prioritizes personalized and preventive care, enhancing the quality of life for populations worldwide.
All governments, healthcare organizations, and stakeholders are encouraged to endorse this declaration. More information is available at
