Globeleq Announces Jonathan Hoffman as New CEO to Lead Sustainable Energy Initiatives

Globeleq, Africa's leading independent power producer, has officially confirmed Jonathan Hoffman as its permanent CEO. This significant decision follows an extensive selection process by the company's board, which considered both internal and external candidates for the top position. Jonathan, who has been with Globeleq since 2010, has taken on various key roles, including Chief Development Officer in 2020 and Interim CEO last July.

Under his guidance, the development team has successfully secured numerous investments and projects throughout Africa. One of the highlights of his career at Globeleq is his leadership over Red Sands, the continent's largest independent battery storage project. Jonathan's extensive experience in the energy sector spans over 20 years, having previously worked with esteemed organizations such as ABB Energy Ventures and InfraCo, which he co-founded.

Since 2015, Globeleq has nearly doubled its operational and construction power generation capacity. Within the 2020s, the company has been responsible for 43% of all Independent Power Producer (IPP) facilities in Sub-Saharan Africa, excluding hydropower plants, that reached financial close. As CEO, Jonathan is set to steer Globeleq through its next growth phase, focusing on the energy transition in southern Africa and Kenya.

The company currently owns and operates twelve renewable energy facilities situated in South Africa, Mozambique, and Kenya. It has 485 MW of power generation capacity under construction and several groundbreaking projects in the development phase across the region. Beyond southern Africa, Globeleq will concentrate on its existing plants that provide crucial electricity to local communities and industries while also generating returns for its shareholders.

Laurence Mulliez, Chair of Globeleq, expressed enthusiasm about Jonathan Hoffman’s new role, stating, "I am pleased to confirm that Jonathan is now our permanent CEO. He knows our employees and portfolio inside out, making him ideally suited to lead Globeleq into its next growth phase. Since becoming Interim CEO last year, Jonathan has impressed the board with his dedication and knowledge of our industry and partners."

In response, Jonathan Hoffman shared his excitement, saying, "I am thrilled to lead the talented team at Globeleq as we work to achieve our mission and drive the energy transition in southern Africa. My primary goal is to solve challenges for our customers and create value for our shareholders."

Globeleq is primarily owned by British International Investment (70%) and Norfund (30%). The company stands as the foremost developer, owner, and operator of power generation facilities in Africa. Since its inception in 2002, the dedicated team at Globeleq has built a diverse portfolio of independent power plants with a combined capacity of 1,794 MW across 17 locations in seven countries. An additional 485 MW is currently under construction, and over 2,000 MW of power generation projects are in development. For more information about the company, visit globeleq.com.
