Revolutionizing Tourism: The Start of Regenerative Tourism Phase 2 in Ikusaka, Nagano

Reviving Nature: Regenerative Tourism Phase 2 in Ikusaka

In the picturesque Ikusaka region of Nagano, the innovative company HiTTiSYO has partnered with local tourism authorities and businesses to launch the second phase of their groundbreaking initiative, known as Regenerative Tourism. This project serves to foster a unique experience where travelers and local communities collaborate to create a sustainable future through engaging tours and events.

A Vision for Collaborative Futures

The second phase of Regenerative Tourism emphasizes the integration of nature-positive practices with local community involvement. It consists of six carefully organized tours that encourage participants to think critically about environmental conservation while actively taking part in restoring the natural ecosystem of Ikusaka. Participants will be acknowledged as official researchers or fellows in recognition of their commitment to ongoing conservation efforts, thereby deepening their bond with the community as their “second hometown.”

Last Year's Success

The Regenerative Tourism project was not merely an experimental endeavor; it received accolades for its innovative approach last year. The first phase was recognized with the Special Prize at the Sustainable Travel Awards by the Japan Tourism Agency, as well as the Excellence Award in the Environmental Category from the JATA SDGs Awards. These achievements highlight the potential of combining tourism with sustainable practices to engage both visitors and residents.

What’s Next in Phase 2?

This year's initiative centers around a concept known as the Regenerative DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization), which stands to redefine tourism from simple experiences to collaborative actions that prioritize the preservation and restoration of local ecology. The respective workshops within the program will not only tackle environmental conservation but also foster interactions between tourists and residents, promoting a sense of belonging and connection to nature. As part of the project activities, there will be significant engagement with local inhabitants to foster relationships aimed at sustainable community development.

Examples of Upcoming Workshops

1. Nature-Positive Workshops: Participants will experience activities designed to foster a deep understanding of the local environment, including collaborative surveys and initiatives aimed at achieving the Nature Coexistence Site registration, as endorsed by the Ministry of the Environment.
2. Land Rehabilitation Sessions: In the natural fields of Ikusaka, travelers will gain hands-on exposure to methods for improving air and water flow, whilst understanding the essential functions of natural cycles.
3. Herbal Medicine Workshops: Led by experts, these sessions will explore the philosophy of Yakuzen, integrating traditional Japanese medicinal concepts into modern practices and helping participants discover their own individual pathways toward wellness and connection.

Meet the Experts

The program will feature an array of professionals, including:
  • - Masahiko Kiji: An associate professor specializing in environmental education and conservation, with a rich background in experiential learning through nature.
  • - Tomonari Waku: A renowned architect and environmental regeneration specialist dedicated to promoting sustainable lifestyles through education and community engagement.
  • - Asuka Nakamura: A herbal medicine researcher who integrates Yakuzen into contemporary practices while emphasizing holistic living through nutrition.

Upcoming Information Session

To broaden understanding of this initiative, a session will be held during the Thursday Gathering at Venture Café Tokyo on July 31, 2025. Participants will have the chance to hear from key figures involved in HiTTiSYO and its partners. The meeting promises to shed light on how businesses and communities can work together for a sustainable future.

Looking Forward

The collaboration with local residents and organizations aims to strengthen regional development through shared knowledge and networks cultivated during this program. HiTTiSYO remains dedicated to inspiring stakeholders by emphasizing the importance of a collective effort towards sustainability. The Regenerative Tourism program serves as a foundational step in achieving this goal, fostering rich partnerships and a commitment to preserving nature for generations to come.
