New Funding Opportunity for Seafood Processing Partnership Plans in Japan

New Funding Opportunity for Seafood Processing Partnerships in Japan

The Fisheries Agency of Japan has announced a new funding initiative aimed at enhancing seafood processing through collaborative partnerships. This program, part of the Fisheries Processing Partnership Plan Support Project, targets key challenges that the seafood processing and distribution sectors face, including shortages of raw materials, labor, and transportation capacity.

Overview of the Initiative

The National Center for Domestic Seafood Distribution Promotion is beginning its second round of applications for the Fisheries Processing Partnership Plan Support Project. The initiative encourages collaboration among stakeholders throughout the seafood supply chain—spanning production, processing, distribution, and sales—to address critical issues and promote a sustainable seafood processing industry.

Key Objectives

The primary objectives of the support program include:
  • - Addressing Raw Material Shortages: Efforts to manage the effects of environmental changes and transition to more sustainable fish species.
  • - Enhancing Productivity: Use of advanced technologies, including ICT and digital transformation, to improve product quality and operational efficiency.
  • - Boosting Sustainable Supply Chains: Implementing automation and other innovative techniques to alleviate labor shortages and establish a resilient supply framework.

Eligible Participants

The program welcomes a range of participants in the seafood sector, including:
  • - Fishermen and aquaculture producers
  • - Distributors and processors
  • - Organizations representing these groups

To qualify for assistance, a coalition must be formed among two or more participants, which may also include financial institutions, local governments, research organizations, and other private entities. Eligible expenses must relate directly to collaborative efforts aimed at solving identified challenges.

Types of Funding Available

The funding covers various costs associated with the following areas:
1. Collaboration Committee Grants: These cover expenses related to establishing a collaboration framework and conducting necessary research or consulting for business planning. The maximum grant amount for this area is 4 million yen.
2. Support for Implementation Plans: Costs incurred to execute the collaboration plans, including market research, promotional material development, logistics improvements, and procurement of necessary equipment and resources.

The co-funding rate for these expenses is up to 50%, providing a substantial financial incentive for seafood processors to participate in the initiative.
