Celebrating Global Cat Day and National Feral Cat Day on October 16

Celebrating Global Cat Day and National Feral Cat Day

On October 16, the world comes together to celebrate Global Cat Day and National Feral Cat Day. Initiated by Alley Cat Allies, a pioneering organization dedicated to the protection and welfare of cats and kittens, these days are vital in raising awareness about the challenges faced by cats in our communities.

A Day for Awareness and Action

Global Cat Day serves as a significant reminder that Cats Are Community™. This statement emphasizes the intrinsic value of cats, who have cohabited with humans for millennia. Alley Cat Allies advocates for a world where cats are treated with the dignity and care they deserve. As Coryn Julien, the program communications officer at Alley Cat Allies notes, “Global Cat Day and National Feral Cat Day are about combining our thought leadership on lifesaving policies and programs for cats with impactful, on-the-ground action.”

On this day, everyone is encouraged to take part in advocating for cats in their neighborhoods. Regardless of whether you are involved in animal welfare or simply a cat lover, you can contribute towards creating a safer environment for these animals.

Getting Involved

National Feral Cat Day is specifically designed to inspire action and change for feral cats. Alley Cat Allies encourages individuals and groups to share their actions on social media to motivate others to join the cause. Every act, big or small, counts. From providing food and shelter for community cats to advocating for non-lethal methods of population control, each effort helps foster a compassionate attitude toward these often-overlooked companions.

For this year’s events, Alley Cat Allies will be hosting a high-quality spay and neuter clinic in Canton, Ohio, as part of their initiative. This clinic is set to assist 200 community cats. The event emphasizes the importance of spaying and neutering to help control the population of feral cats responsibly. In addition, each cat will receive essential vaccinations, microchipping, and any necessary medical care.

Community cat caregivers involved in the event will also receive a case of wet cat food, aiding them in their efforts to care for these animals. This aligns with Alley Cat Allies’ overarching goal to transform community attitudes and promote humane practices concerning cats.
