Exploring Unique Perspectives: Tetsuro Kano's 'nest / nested' Exhibit
An exciting exhibition titled 'nest / nested' by artist Tetsuro Kano is set to open at the social issue gallery SIGNAL in Toranomon, Tokyo, starting March 4. Produced by SIGNING Co., Ltd., this is the 16th installment of the Signature Exhibition series. The show encourages attendees to reflect on humanity's relationship with nature through unique artistic expressions.
About the 'nest / nested' Exhibit
Tetsuro Kano, born in 1980 in Miyagi Prefecture and currently residing in Kanagawa, has long been known for his thought-provoking installations that merge natural elements with man-made objects. Through his work, he introduces audiences to alternative perspectives, coalescing materials that often intertwine like animal nests. This intermingling of forms invites viewers to contemplate new meanings and reconsider the traditional purposes of these materials.
The duality presented in the installation also embodies accidental or consequential relationships, drawing us into reflections on coexistence between humans and nature, capitalism's relentless forward drive, and the paradoxes of democracy. Kano's work ultimately pushes us to confront our societal structures and the intricate narrative we weave between the natural world and our own.
Meet the Artist
Kano’s creative process focuses on biological perspectives, hunting, fishing, and surveying. By integrating the viewpoints of other beings, his installations craft a new landscape that serves as a form of drawing in space. His works incorporate a variety of materials—from natural items and pre-manufactured products to discarded objects and antiques—challenging conventional interpretations and the meaning we assign to the physical world.
In recent years, he has participated in several prominent exhibitions, including the
Echigo-Tsumari 2025 Summer and Autumn Exhibition,
Setouchi International Art Festival 2025, and upcoming shows at Nagoya Castle and Hirosaki Rennga Warehouse Museum in 2024. Each exhibition pushes boundaries and reevaluates how we perceive the interplay of our environment and societal narratives.
