Mews Becomes First Hospitality Management System to Secure E-Money License in Europe

Mews Achieves Major Milestone with E-Money License

Mews Financial Services B.V. has recently secured an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license granted by De Nederlandsche Bank, marking a historic moment for the hospitality management sector in the European Economic Area (EEA). This significant achievement allows Mews to enhance its financial services by enabling hotels to manage their payments using a unified system.

Enhanced Control Over Payments

The newly-acquired EMI license bestows Mews with the regulatory status necessary to handle payments through its own established infrastructure. This innovation provides hotels with greater control over the flow of funds within the system they are already utilizing. Previously, operational data was recorded in Mews while financial data originated from third-party systems, creating a fragmented experience. Now, however, Mews is empowered to integrate both operational and financial data on a singular platform where revenues are generated, allowing for streamlined and efficient management.

Richard Valtr, the founder of Mews, emphasized the critical need for a centralized financial management system within the hospitality industry. He noted that traditionally, the flow of finances has been managed across various disconnected systems, leading to increased risks and inefficiencies. The EMI license paves the way for Mews to not only bridge this gap but also develop financial functionalities that are tailored specifically to the hotel industry.

Responding to Industry Needs

In 2025, Mews processed $19.7 billion in hotel transactions. The complexity of relating a hotel’s income to its operational activities exceeds what can be managed by a fragmented infrastructure. A regulated, integrated financial framework designed specifically for the hospitality sector can provide direct solutions to these challenges. Mews Financial Services will fulfill governance, fund protection, and compliance requirements necessary for providing payment services in the EEA, including strict regulations to keep client funds separate from Mews’ operational accounts.

Furthermore, this license enables Mews to introduce risk management features, fraud monitoring, sanctions verification, and anti-money laundering measures directly into their system. This not only enhances regulatory compliance but also solidifies Mews’ commitment to providing a safe and secure financial environment for its users.

Future Financial Services Expansion

Mews plans to gradually roll out its regulated financial services starting at the end of 2026, beginning with a pilot group of hotels in the Netherlands and eventually expanding to the wider EEA. The long-term goal of Mews is to become the trusted financial partner for major hotel brands by transforming operational data flowing through their platform into innovative financial products designed to help hotels amplify revenue and boost operational strength.
