The energy landscape is witnessing a significant transformation as Terra-Gen proudly announces the commercial operations of its Lockhart III solar project located in San Bernardino County, California. This ambitious initiative is part of a broader commitment by Terra-Gen, a prominent independent renewable energy producer in the U.S., owned jointly by Masdar and Igneo Infrastructure Partners.
The Lockhart III solar facility boasts an impressive capacity of 125 megawatts (MW). This output is equated to supplying renewable electricity to approximately 62,500 households and businesses annually, showcasing a tangible solution to meet the increasing demand for clean energy in California and beyond.
Terra-Gen’s CEO, John O'Connor, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, noting the need for clean and reliable energy sources that can alleviate stress on the electric grid. The organization's dedicated efforts not only strive to maintain power supply consistency but also ensure that manufacturing and businesses continue to thrive without interruption.
The newly launched facility connects to Southern California Edison's Kramer Junction Substation via an existing gen-tie line, consolidating its integration into the state’s energy framework. Contracts for this substantial capacity have been secured under long-term agreements with various corporate buyers and California load-serving entities, ensuring a stable energy supply for the foreseeable future.
The construction phase of the Lockhart III solar project was not only landmark due to its scale but also because it contributed significantly to local employment. At the project's peak, over 370 jobs were created, culminating in nearly 260,000 hours of work with an outstanding safety record—no lost-time incidents were reported during construction. This accomplishment is a testament to Terra-Gen's commitment to operational excellence and community engagement.
Further enhancing the Lockhart solar initiative, Terra-Gen is also advancing plans for a fourth phase of the project, expected to commence commercial operations in the third quarter of 2026. This upcoming phase aims to add an additional 80 MW of capacity, ensuring that the Lockhart solar complex continues to expand and contribute to California’s sustainable energy goals.
