Japan's Second Call for Over-Tourism Prevention Projects
Starting June 1st, the Japan Tourism Agency will commence a second call for applications for the "Initiative for Preventing and Mitigating Over-Tourism and Enhancing Tourist Reception Environments". This phase will run until July 17, 2023, at 12:00 PM. To support regions and businesses interested in applying, an online briefing and workshop focused on KPI setting for project proposals will be held on June 10, 2023.
Background
In 2025, the number of foreign tourists visiting Japan is expected to reach approximately 42.68 million, with spending soaring to around 9.5 trillion yen, marking unprecedented growth. However, this surge brings challenges such as excessive concentrations of tourists in certain areas and issues with visitor behavior, highlighting the need for comprehensive tourism strategies. To ensure that inbound tourism remains a robust and strategic industry in Japan, it's crucial to develop effective measures through community engagement and understanding.
The primary objective of this initiative is to address the tourism challenges faced by various regions by systematically enhancing the tourist reception environment, promoting sustainable tourism.
