National Children's Center Launches Read Across America Initiative with Local Leaders to Promote Literacy
National Children's Center Kicks Off Read Across America Initiative
On March 3, 2025, the National Children's Center (NCC) proudly commenced its Read Across America initiative, designed to inspire a love of reading among young learners. The event took place at the NCC's Early Learning and Early Intervention Center, located in the vibrant area of Congress Heights, Washington, D.C. This spirited occasion featured a special reading session where former ELC student Abria Law teamed up with her mother, LaJoy Johnson-Law, a representative of the District of Columbia State Board of Education and Ward 8.
The morning began with an engaging Storytime session, where Abria and LaJoy captivated the audience of children, highlighting the joys and wonders of literacy. “Reading opens up a world of imagination and opportunities for children,” said Terrance King, NCC's President and CEO. “It allows them to laugh, feel excitement, and be inspired.” This sentiment reflects the ELC's dedication to enhancing literacy and creative thinking in children of all abilities.
As part of the kick-off, families, leaders, and community members are encouraged to participate in a series of activities slated for Spirit Week, extending from March 3 to March 7. Charlene Polk, the Family Engagement Manager, is set to orchestrate a rich array of reading events aimed at bridging connections between community partners and parents. The goal: to foster a shared joy for reading and learning.
The Early Learning and Early Intervention Center, an NAEYC-accredited facility, serves children aged 8 weeks to 5 years, providing a nurturing, inclusive environment that caters to those with varying developmental needs. Over three decades, the ELC has impacted countless lives, offering essential services to both typically developing children and those who are medically fragile or have exceptional needs. The NCC's commitment to advocacy is unwavering, ensuring that all children can thrive as learners.
Celebrating its 65-year legacy, the NCC has continuously championed children with disabilities and their families, ingraining a culture of support and inclusion in the community. Through initiatives like Read Across America, the NCC aims to remind everyone of the essential role literacy plays in childhood development, echoing the message that every child deserves access to quality education and the transformative powers of reading.
As the week of activities unfolds, the center encourages families to join in the celebrations and share their experiences on social media. “We want to see our community come together to inspire the next generation,” urged LaJoy Johnson-Law during the event.
For those interested in learning more about upcoming events or getting involved with the Read Across America initiative, detailed information is available via the NCC's official contact channels. The early learning programs not only guarantee educational quality but emphasize preventive care and intervention strategies to ensure that every child is set on a path to success.
In a world where screen time often overshadows traditional reading, initiatives such as this are crucial in fostering relationships between books and children, cultivating a deeper appreciation for literature in the long run. Whether through story sessions, hands-on activities, or community engagement, the goal remains: to instill a positive attitude towards reading that will resonate throughout their lives.
Join NCC in celebrating the joys of literacy and the power of stories, as together we embark on a month of reading adventures encapsulated in the Read Across America initiative.
