Greenberg Traurig Strengthens Private Funds Group with Jonathan Temps in Chicago

In a notable move to bolster its Private Funds Group, global law firm Greenberg Traurig welcomes Jonathan Temps as a shareholder in its Chicago office. This addition is expected to significantly enhance the firm's Global Real Estate Practice, given Temps’ extensive experience in private equity, investment funds, and mergers and acquisitions, which spans over 25 years.

Before joining Greenberg Traurig, Temps was a prominent figure at Baker McKenzie, where he honed his expertise in guiding sponsors of private-equity real estate funds and their investors through the intricacies of raising, managing, and deploying capital. As part of his new role, Temps's responsibilities will encompass every stage of the real estate investment fund lifecycle, including major activities such as mergers and acquisitions (M&A), co-investment opportunities, continuation fund arrangements, secondary transactions, and joint venture partnerships.

Richard A. Rosenbaum, Executive Chairman of Greenberg Traurig, stated, "Jonathan brings exceptional real estate and corporate funds experience that further strengthens our already robust private funds team. His entrepreneurial spirit and client-focused approach align with the qualities that drive our firm's growth. With the sustained interest in private real estate investment vehicles, Jonathan’s expertise will be pivotal in addressing client demand and fulfilling our strategic goals in this critical area."

Temps’s career highlights an impressive track record; he has negotiated and finalized numerous deals worth tens of billions of dollars. His experience encompasses complex, high-value investment transactions across various property asset classes in the United States and internationally, including regions such as Asia, Europe, and South America. His prior roles include working at an investment bank and a real estate private equity fund, where he led the capital markets and legal divisions.

In his new position, Temps is expected to enhance legal strategies tailored to meet clients' business objectives, especially in navigating the complexities of fund structures and platform-level organization. Michael J. Baum, Co-President of Greenberg Traurig and co-chair of the firm's Global Real Estate Practice, remarked, "Jonathan’s extensive experience with both closed-end and open-end funds will greatly benefit our team and the clients we serve. We are thrilled to have him join us."

Moreover, Temps's expertise extends to navigating tax-advantaged real estate investment structures, including Delaware Statutory Trusts (DST), umbrella partnership real estate investment trusts (UPREIT), and qualified opportunity zones, making him an invaluable asset to the firm as they adapt to shifting market demands.

"I am excited to join Greenberg Traurig's esteemed private funds team at such a dynamic time in the real estate investment sector," Temps expressed. "The firm’s collaborative culture and global presence will enable me to deliver outstanding legal services that help clients navigate current challenges and seize new opportunities in real estate investment."

Temps earned his J.D. from the New York University School of Law, and his academic achievements also include honors from the University of Chicago, where he obtained both an MBA and an undergraduate degree, along with a master's degree in history from the State University of New York at Albany.

Greenberg Traurig, with over 3,000 lawyers in 51 locations worldwide, continues to deliver innovative and strategic legal services across various sectors.
