Tokyo Launches Contest to Prevent Consumer Issues Among Young People

The rise in consumer scams targeting young individuals has prompted the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to take action. Recently, they announced the start of the "STOP! Consumer Trouble for Youth" contest, encouraging young people to create compelling commercials (CMs) and scripts designed to raise awareness about consumer issues.

Running from June 3 to October 16, this contest aims to engage youths aged 29 and younger living, studying, or working in Tokyo. With the alarming rise in various scams, including misleading ads for risky side jobs or fraudulent hair removal consultations, the government recognizes the importance of outreach and education.

Tokyo has previously witnessed a staggering number of petitions regarding consumer fraud, with the 7th fiscal year recording around 7,295 entries from 4,621 participants. This highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and awareness among the younger generation.

The contest is open to anyone aged 13 to 29 residing in Tokyo, whether individuals or groups. Participants are required to submit works that incorporate messages preventing consumer damage and direct audiences to the Tokyo Consumer Life Comprehensive Center. Judging Process


A panel consisting of notable figures including entertainer Sugi-chan and talent Hirona Nagahama will assess the submissions. Other judges include voice actress Amane Shindo and renowned director and novelist Haruki Hashizume. They will specially evaluate creativity, message clarity, and originality. The winning entries will be announced between November and December, with awards such as "Excellence Awards" and “Special Jury Awards" being distributed to the top three works.

Winners can expect to see their scripts transformed into engaging CM videos that will be promoted widely, with three exemplary works being produced for public dissemination. This year, a remarkable 258,000 views were counted across the CM videos, showcasing the impact these campaigns can have.
