Shibuya PARCO's Grand Revival: Celebrating Five Decades of Culture

On February 25, 2026, Shibuya PARCO will host an event that marks not only the release of two significant books but also the revitalization of one of Tokyo's most iconic districts. The event, taking place at the DOMMUNE venue on the ninth floor of Shibuya PARCO, will delve into the themes of urban culture and future transformations in society.

The two books being celebrated are "The Revival of Shibuya PARCO" by Yugo Hiramatsu and "Half a Century of Shibuya" by Tomoko Uchida. These works coincide with Shibuya's major redevelopment efforts, reflecting on its rich cultural history while looking towards the future. Hiramatsu, who is currently the manager of Shibuya PARCO, explores the strategic efforts taken to rejuvenate the shopping district after its second resurgence. His book discusses critical topics such as the future of commercial facilities, the intricacies of concept creation, and the challenges faced in brand development and talent cultivation within the retail space.

Uchida’s book, on the other hand, encapsulates Shibuya's last fifty years, providing unique perspectives on its urban and cultural evolution. Drawing from a series of influential essays by various contributors, the publication serves as a vital compass for navigating the next half-century and beyond. With inputs from notable figures such as Shigeru Itoi, Maki Nomiya, and artist collective Chim↑Pom, it promises a comprehensive insight into what has shaped Shibuya and what will continue to influence its trajectory.

The event will not only feature discussions from the authors but also include appearances by special guests who are well-versed in Shibuya's cultural landscape. Together with participants, they aim to explore necessary transformations for cities and societies, leveraging Shibuya's unique identity as a reference point. Attendees can expect to engage in meaningful dialogues regarding the desirable legacy that must be preserved for future generations.
