Space Needle's Base 2 Space Celebrates a Milestone Anniversary
The iconic Space Needle in Seattle has made a significant impact over the past decade through its annual Base 2 Space stair climb event, which benefits the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. With registration now open for the 10th edition, set for September 27, 2026, this year's focus not only marks a milestone in fundraising but also celebrates the lives touched by cancer.
A Legacy of Giving
Since its inception, over 17,000 climbers have participated, collectively raising more than $5.8 million for vital cancer research. Just last year, the event achieved a remarkable milestone, bringing in its highest donation yet at $1.16 million. This money plays a crucial role in supporting Fred Hutch's mission to prevent and cure cancer. The climb gathers supporters of all ages and fitness levels, inviting anyone aged eight and above to tackle the Space Needle's 832 open-air steps and 98 flights.
An Epic Ascent
Participants ascend to the Observation Deck, which stands at 520 feet above Seattle, offering breathtaking views of the stunning landscape, including Mount Rainier and Puget Sound. This unique climb not only challenges participants physically but creates an unforgettable experience as climbers share their stories and support with one another. Historical records note that the oldest climber to conquer the challenge was 92 years old, showcasing the event's inclusivity and spirit of determination. The fastest ascent only took three minutes and 34 seconds, highlighting the competitive edge some participants bring to the event.
Building Community and Support
Ron Sevart, President and CEO of the Space Needle, emphasized how Base 2 Space has fostered a sense of community. He stated, "It's a chance to create togetherness and inspire giving. We eagerly await this gathering each year. The commitment from participants helps to propel crucial cancer research forward. Thank you to everyone involved over the past decade; we can't wait to greet you at the stairs!"
Chad Lenchuk, a consistent Base 2 Space climber and top fundraiser, spoke about the persistent motivation he finds in the climbs, noting, "Every year brings a new story, inspiring me to continue fighting for a cure." With every step climbed, participants honor those who have battled cancer while raising essential funds for research.
Registration and Participation
The registration for this exhilarating climb comes with a commitment to fundraising, requiring adults to raise a minimum of $200 and youth participants aged 8-17 to raise $100, all benefiting the Fred Hutch Cancer Center directly. Those who sign up before June 1 can take advantage of early bird pricing, giving them discounted rates of $76 for adults and $55 for youths.
As the climb date approaches, more partnerships will be revealed, as climbers from local organizations such as Pearl Jam and the Seattle Seahawks have previously added extra excitement to the event.
Looking Ahead to the Future
Fred Hutch's Vice President of Philanthropy, Kelly O'Brien, expressed pride in this milestone, recognizing that the funds raised are essential to advancing cancer research and offers hope to patients and families affected by the disease. At the conclusion of this year's climb, top fundraisers will have the extraordinary opportunity to honor their efforts by climbing the spire of the Space Needle, a distinction reserved for those who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to fundraising.
As the Space Needle prepares for this spectacular journey, it stands as a symbol of resilience and hope for many, and Base 2 Space continues to be a beacon of light in the fight against cancer. To learn more about participating or to support this cause, visit
