Sanya to Host 2027 Formula E Asian Season Opener and Reinvent Itself as Global Event Hub

Sanya Secures Its Place in Formula E History

In an exciting announcement, the coastal city of Sanya, known for its tropical climate, will officially host the first round of the 2027 Asian season of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. Scheduled for April 17, 2027, this event marks a significant milestone as it introduces the GEN4 racing series to Chinese soil. After an absence of seven years, the return of Formula E to Sanya emphasizes the city’s commitment to becoming a leading global event destination.

Alberto Longo, co-founder and championship director of Formula E, expressed enthusiasm about returning to Sanya, stating, “Sanya is a circuit that pushes drivers to their absolute limits. Organizing the GEN4 here at the start of the season is a deliberate choice.” This event will be part of a record-breaking 21-race season spread across 13 cities worldwide, showcasing the next-generation electric racing on Sanya’s unique coastal urban circuit.

The return of Formula E is not just about motorsports; it symbolizes Sanya’s emergence as a hub for international events. Just six months after initiating independent customs operations on the island as part of Hainan’s free trade port, Sanya has already welcomed 1.654 million cross-border travelers, reflecting a 31.2% increase compared to the same period last year. This vibrant tourism sector is bolstered by a robust infrastructure designed to support large-scale events.

Sanya has recently played host to other notable events including the 6th Asian Beach Games and the Hainan Island International Film Festival. The city is preparing to welcome the finale of the HYROX World Fitness Championship, further solidifying its reputation as a multifaceted venue for varied international events.

This transformation into a bustling event hub is backed by three structural advantages. Firstly, Hainan offers a visa exemption policy for 86 countries, alongside open skies allowing 36 direct international routes to 28 foreign destinations.

In addition, Sanya manages 23 liaison offices worldwide to promote tourism and facilitate direct cooperation with international rights holders and professional organizers. Furthermore, the city provides a comprehensive “one-stop” service for cultural and sporting events that streamlines formerly complex administrative processes for organizers globally.

A representative from the Sanya municipal government stated, “We are establishing a platform that can sustainably host large-scale global events, and we warmly invite organizers and visitors from around the world to discover the unique charm of a livable city that is both welcoming and thriving.”

As Sanya gears up for the new Formula E season, it is clear that this tropical paradise is committed to promoting itself as a prime destination for high-profile international events. As the excitement builds towards April 2027, the city looks forward to showcasing the next level of electric racing, mesmerizing both fans and participants alike as they experience the electrifying atmosphere that Sanya has to offer.
