Collaboration Against Trafficking: Our Rescue and Shakti Samuha
In a significant step towards combating sex trafficking in Nepal, the global NGO Our Rescue announced an expanded partnership with Shakti Samuha, a local organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking. This collaboration aims to open a new shelter that will provide refuge and support for survivors of sex trafficking, significantly increasing their capacity to assist those in need.
The New Shelter: A Safe Haven
The upcoming shelter is designed to accommodate up to 34 survivors, enhancing the existing capabilities of Shakti Samuha's facilities. It will not only offer essential services like food, clothing, and secure housing but will also prioritize emotional support and trauma-informed care. Located strategically near a medical facility and a police station, the shelter will ensure that survivors have prompt access to emergency and law enforcement services when necessary.
This initiative is a vital part of a broader mission to dismantle sex trafficking networks operating in Nepal, which has been plagued by this issue for years. As part of an ongoing effort, the partnership between Our Rescue and Shakti Samuha has evolved over six years, focused on comprehensive support that includes housing, education, vocational training, and access to legal aid for survivors.
Empowering Survivors Through Education and Advocacy
Tammy Lee, CEO of Our Rescue, expressed her belief in the transformative power of advocacy by highlighting the journey of Charimaya Tamang, a survivor of trafficking who now leads Shakti Samuha. Lee stated, "Charimaya's remarkable transformation from trafficking survivor to fierce advocate is a profound testament to the strength of the human spirit." Under her leadership, Shakti Samuha continues to engage actively with law enforcement authorities to combat trafficking effectively.
Over the past year, Our Rescue has invested in enhancing Shakti Samuha's capabilities, including funding for the installation of CCTV along Nepal's open border with India, aiding authorities in identifying and protecting individuals at risk of trafficking. This project was instrumental in safeguarding 712 vulnerable individuals. The success and demand highlighted the urgent need for more shelter space and robust survivor care services in the region.
The Call for Support and Donations
As the new shelter prepares to open, efforts are underway to garner financial support from the community. Donations will directly contribute to survivor care initiatives, ensuring that those who escape exploitation have a secure and nurturing environment to recover.
