Celebrating Tradition and Innovation at The Bunka Fashion College Show 2025

Bunka Fashion College Fashion Show 2025

The Bunka Fashion College, a pioneer of fashion education in Japan since its establishment in the Taisho era, is excited to announce the highly anticipated 2025 Bunka Matsuri (Cultural Festival), showcasing the dazzling I-Bu (Day Course) Fashion Show from November 2 to November 4, 2025. This remarkable event draws over 10,000 visitors annually, making it the highlight of the festival.

The fashion show is a true collaborative effort, led entirely by approximately 700 students, who take charge of everything from conceptualization and design to model performances, hair and makeup, audiovisual displays, lighting, staging, venue management, and PR. This impressive scale reflects the unique blend of tradition and youthful creativity that Bunka Fashion College is known for.

On the eve of the festival, November 1, a special reception will be held for media representatives and industry stakeholders, offering them a preview of the show and an invaluable opportunity to connect with the next generation of fashion innovators. Attendees can delve into the creative visions of the students shaping the future of the fashion industry.

Show Theme: "Un:"

The theme for this year’s show, “Un:,” symbolically translates to “untitled.” It embodies the passion and dedication that Bunka Fashion College has nurtured over the years. The theme reflects the energy and limitless creativity of the students, aiming to express their emotions and ideas through the fashion show. Instead of defining the event with a specific title, attendees are invited to discover their personal interpretations and resonance during the show. These thoughts were shared by the student committee chair, Fan Yuna.

Show Structure and Highlights

The fashion show consists of six unique scenes, featuring 72 distinct garments. Each scene showcases diverse themes:
1. Porcelain: Capturing the delicate beauty and fragility of porcelain.
2. Pepu Bés: A fusion of ethnicity and the cosmos.
3. This is all square: Exploring geometric patterns.
4. 21917193: Representing the intricacies of human emotion.
5. Happy warriors: Envisioning a joyful future free from conflict.
6. ICONIQ STAR: A scene featuring contest-winning designs and collaborations with industry partners.

This year introduces a significant change in the stage setup, replacing traditional large panels on the runway with flowing fabrics. The models' movements will create a dynamic interplay with sound and airflow, evoking the palpable excitement right before the show. By eliminating these fixed structures, the performance invites attendees to embrace the theme of “Un:” by challenging conventional perceptions in fashion.

Special Contest Scene: 21917193 - Next Generation Designers

In collaboration with SHINDO, a renowned Japanese supplier of fashion materials, Bunka Fashion College will host the special contest scene 21917193 as part of the festival. Students can utilize various materials, including ribbons, laces, and blades from SHINDO, to create innovative expressions. Judging will occur through a presentation panel and a public voting system via social media, where the top entry will be featured at Première Vision, a leading textile trade show in Paris in February 2026, alongside the chance to travel to Paris.

JanSport Upcycle Project

The JanSport Upcycle Project allows students to reimagine and redesign products from this prominent outdoor bag brand. Their creations will be showcased in the “happy warriors” segment, merging functionality with creativity.

Thematic Exhibits and Collaborations

In a gallery adjacent to the show, an exhibit corresponding to the theme “Un:” will be on display. This will feature educational collaborations and textile explorations inspired by surrealistic perspectives, reinterpreting various artistic elements. Visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in an interactive installation, adding their interpretations of this year’s title to the display, culminating in a collaborative art piece.

This year, the magazine Soen partners with Bunka Fashion College, celebrating the festival's legacy with a curated photo collection, featuring model SUMIRE, whose contributions illuminate the engagement between fashion and art creatively.
