Chancay Port: A New Link Between South America and Asia
In a historical moment for both Peru and China, Chancay Port was inaugurated, solidifying its role as a crucial maritime bridge between South America and Asia. The event was attended by key leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, who participated via video link in a ceremony steeped in significance for international trade.
Initial Vision and Development
Gonzalo Rios, deputy general manager of COSCO Shipping Ports Chancay Peru S.A., played a pivotal role in this ambitious project. With over 40 years of government service in Peru, Rios was well-versed in the intricacies of cooperation between the two nations. His dream to engage in a major national project materialized when he received an invitation in 2019 to join the Chancay Port initiative. The construction, which transformed a formerly unremarkable beach into a state-of-the-art port, reflects years of hard work and dedication.
The port was officially opened on November 14, 2024. During the ceremony, the two heads of state jointly commanded the commencement of operations, marking a new chapter in Peru-China relations.
