Hanwha Power Systems Gains Approval for LNG Carrier Ammonia Fuel Retrofits
Hanwha Power Systems Receives Approval for Ammonia Fuel Gas Turbine Retrofit
In a significant advancement for sustainable maritime technology, Hanwha Power Systems has recently secured an Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This approval functions as a green light for the company's pioneering initiative to transform 174K LNG carriers into vessels powered by ammonia fuel gas turbines. This notable achievement was officially announced at GASTECH 2025 held in Milan, Italy.
The Journey Towards Sustainability
Ammonia, a compound composed of nitrogen and hydrogen, presents a unique opportunity in the realm of shipping as it does not emit carbon dioxide upon combustion. Hanwha Power Systems has dedicated efforts towards developing a propulsion system capable of operating entirely on ammonia without relying on supplementary oil fuels. As global maritime industries pivot towards emissions reduction, this initiative positions the company as a leader in transitioning to alternative fuels.
Addressing Global Emissions Goals
In response to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) ambitious target of achieving carbon neutrality within the shipping sector by 2050, Hanwha's ammonia gas turbine presents a viable zero-carbon solution. The AiP approval followed rigorous evaluations of essential technical documentation, including the Process Flow Diagram (PFD) and safety measures like the Emergency Shutdown System (ESD).
This comprehensive review ensures that the ammonia-powered vessels will meet international safety standards affirmed by the ABS. The significance of this AiP also empowers Hanwha Power Systems to offer retrofitting solutions for various ship types, thereby enhancing their capabilities in the growing zero-carbon maritime market.
A Collaboration for the Future
Hyoung-seok Kim, Head of the Marine Solutions Division at Hanwha Power Systems, commented, “This AiP recognition substantiates both the technical and commercial viability of ammonia fuel turbine propulsion systems. We aim to foster deeper collaboration with shipowners, shipyards, and classification societies to expedite the practical application and commercial operation of this green technology.”
As the world looks towards greener alternatives, Hanwha's proactive strides not only serve to bolster their leadership position within the maritime sector but also contribute toward the global quest for sustainable energy solutions.
Participation in GASTECH 2025
During the GASTECH event, which ran from September 9 to 12, Hanwha Power Systems showcased innovative technologies related to FSRU modifications and CO2 compressors integral to carbon capture and storage processes. These advancements reiterate Hanwha's commitment to being a crucial partner in achieving carbon neutrality objectives.
The company's achievements are a testament to the collaborative spirit needed within the maritime industry to meet pressing environmental challenges, ensuring that sustainability becomes a core operational standard. With continued focus on innovation and an unwavering commitment to environmental goals, Hanwha Power Systems is truly setting a course toward a greener maritime future.
