Massachusetts Nurses Association Secures New Contract for Boston MedFlight Paramedics and Nurses

MNA Boston MedFlight Nurses and Paramedics Ratify New Contract

On November 7, 2025, the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA) achieved a major milestone, successfully ratifying a new three-year contract for nurses and paramedics working at Boston MedFlight, the premier critical care transport service in the region. This agreement has been hailed as a significant move toward enhancing both patient care and workforce sustainability by providing substantial wage increases and improved benefits.

According to a statement from James Boomhower, a Critical Care Transport Specialist and MNA Bargaining Committee member, the newly ratified contract reflects the dedication and specialized skills that nurses and paramedics bring to their vital roles. “The vital care we provide—from critically ill newborns to severely injured patients—requires highly trained professionals. This new contract helps ensure we can attract and retain such expertise,” Boomhower stated.

Key Features of the Contract

The contract comes with several significant enhancements aimed at both immediate and long-term benefits for the healthcare professionals involved:

Competitive Pay Increases

  • - Nurses: The contract provides nurses with an impressive 15.5% pay raise in addition to existing wage step increases, amounting to a potential overall increase of up to 27.5% within three years.
  • - Paramedics: For paramedics, the new agreement ensures a 20% increase in new compensation, with potential cumulative increases totaling up to 32% over the same three-year period. Additionally, the differential between each step of the wage scale will increase from 4% to 4.5%.

These financial improvements are expected to not only reward the hard work of these professionals but also make the positions more attractive to future applicants, thus fortifying the workforce in critical care transport.

Additional Leave Time

In recognition of the demanding nature of their jobs, the contract also includes three additional days of Leave Time. This improvement aims to support rest and recuperation for frontline workers, ensuring they are better equipped to provide high-quality care when responding to emergencies.

Joe McGrath, an RN with MedFlight and fellow member of the MNA Bargaining Committee, expressed pride in the contract. “Our crews provide hospital-level intensive care wherever patients may be. This contract reinforces our commitment to our team and assists them in managing work-life balance, which is crucial in high-stress environments,” he emphasized.

This recent contract ratification is a significant step forward in ensuring that Boston MedFlight can continue to provide high-caliber transport care, reinforcing their mission to deliver excellent healthcare services in some of the most challenging and life-threatening circumstances.

Founded in 1903, the Massachusetts Nurses Association is the largest union of registered nurses in Massachusetts, representing 25,000 members. The MNA continues to act as a powerful advocate for nursing standards and a committed voice for the welfare of nurses and the patients they serve.
