Hoya Corporation's Eye City Launches Eco-Friendly Initiatives in Yokkaichi City, Japan

Hoya Corporation's Eye City Eco Project in Yokkaichi City

On August 14, 2025, Eye City, the specialized contact lens retailer under Hoya Corporation's Eye Care Company, signed a pivotal agreement with Yokkaichi City in Mie Prefecture. This marks the first collaboration of its kind between Eye City and local government entities aimed at collecting used disposable contact lens cases. The initiative, framed under the concept of creating a sustainable and livable Yokkaichi, aligns perfectly with Eye City's eco-friendly endeavors, particularly their Eye City Eco Project.

The primary goal of this partnership is to encourage proper disposal and recycling habits among residents while reducing plastic waste. Through this agreement, Yokkaichi City will focus on spreading awareness and conducting collection activities, while Eye City will manage the recycling processes and provide collection boxes. This initiative underscores a shared commitment to enhance environmental consciousness among the community and contribute meaningfully to the global sustainability objectives outlined in the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).

Details of the Agreement

  • - Agreement Name: Agreement Concerning the Collection of Used Disposable Contact Lens Cases
  • - Date of Agreement: August 14, 2025
  • - Collection Points: Located at various municipal facilities including the Yokkaichi City Hall and other community centers.
  • - Roles:
- Yokkaichi City: Responsible for publicizing the initiative and conducting collection operations.
- Hoya Corporation Eye Care Company: Will oversee the management of collected resources and supply collection boxes.

About the Eye City Eco Project

The Eye City Eco Project is a nationwide recycling initiative that encourages the collection of used contact lens cases across approximately 7,440 designated locations, including Eye City stores and participating schools, municipalities, and businesses. This project, which commenced in 2010, aims to support three significant social contributions:
1. Environmental preservation through the recycling of lens cases
2. Supporting independence and employment for people with disabilities
3. Contributions to the Japan Eye Bank Association

Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, the Eye City Eco Project has evolved into a comprehensive recycling campaign, engaging diverse organizations and communities. Since its inception, it has collected over 789.45 tons of used lens cases — equivalent to about 789 million individual cases — actively participating in reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2,178.88 tons. The project has also raised significant funds, exceeding 17 million yen, for those wishing to restore their vision.

Despite these efforts, approximately 4,000 tons of used lens cases are still discarded as waste each year. Hoya Corporation remains determined to expand this initiative, urging further community engagement and collaboration.

Current Participation (As of July 2025)

  • - Schools: 3,248 institutions (including elementary, middle, high schools, and universities)
  • - Businesses: 1,269 companies with 3,753 locations
  • - Local Governments: 445 locations (including public facilities)

Call for Participation

Eye City is continuously seeking additional organizations who wish to join this recycling effort. Together, stakeholders can work to improve waste management and increase the awareness of environmental issues.
