Boeing's 777-9 Flight Training Simulators Achieve Initial Qualification Approvals
Boeing's 777-9 Flight Training Simulators Achieve Initial Qualification
In a significant milestone for Boeing, their 777-9 flight training simulators have received initial qualifications from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). This approval is crucial as it marks a step toward enabling airline pilot training with regulatory endorsement. The approval came on February 19, 2026, a date that Boeing aims to remember for its advancements in aviation training technology.
Capt. Gary Mandy, who serves as the chief technical pilot for the 777X program, commented on the importance of securing these approvals, stating that it prepares them for the impending start of flight training. Pilots are set to gain an immersive training experience through these simulators, enhancing their operational readiness for the new 777-9 model.
The training devices, situated at Boeing's Training Campus in Gatwick, UK, were developed in collaboration with CAE, a leading manufacturer of simulation technology. The setup includes a sophisticated full-flight simulator and a flight training device that faithfully replicates the airplane's state-of-the-art systems, preparing pilots effectively for the aircraft's operational demands.
Boeing is proud of this recent achievement, with Chris Broom, vice president of Commercial Training Solutions at Boeing Global Services, reinforcing the company's commitment to delivering high-quality training solutions. According to Broom, these training devices integrate advanced aircraft systems and simulation software to realistically model flight dynamics and environmental conditions, further emphasizing their dedication to meeting the needs of global airline customers and regulators.
Once used by regulatory authorities, these training devices will serve to validate and approve training courseware before the commencement of pilot instruction. The collaborative effort behind this achievement reflects a multi-year endeavor involving Boeing’s and CAE’s top experts. CAE President Alexandre Prevost expressed excitement for this collaboration, highlighting the continuous commitment to delivering cutting-edge full-flight simulators to their shared customers worldwide.
The 777-9, the first in the 777X family, comes with a flight deck that is designed not just for functionality but for comfort and commonality with earlier models such as the 777 and the 787 Dreamliner. Noteworthy design features include large-format displays with touchscreen capabilities, an option for dual head-up displays akin to those on the 787 Dreamliner, and redesigned pilot seats that enhance comfort during flights.
Furthermore, the new model includes a unique control mechanism for the 777X folding wingtips, providing clear indications regarding whether the wingtips are extended, in motion, or folded. Additionally, there is the integration of a portable tablet-based Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) capability which modernizes the cockpit experience.
Boeing stands as a leading global aerospace company and a top U.S. exporter, dedicated to developing and manufacturing commercial airplanes, defense products, and space systems for customers in over 150 countries. The company prides itself on innovation and sustainability while aiming to foster community impact and economic opportunities. Boeing’s steadfast commitment to safety, quality, and integrity directs its operations and future endeavors.
As Boeing advances its training capabilities, the 777-9 flight training simulators represent a leap forward in preparing pilots for the aviation industry's future. The aviation world eagerly awaits the commencement of pilot training that promises to utilize these sophisticated devices, supporting the seamless operation of the newest generation of Boeing aircraft.
