Japan's Green Investment Corp. Boosts Support for Oishii Farm's Expansion in the US

Japan Green Investment Corp. Enhances Support for Oishii Farm

In a notable new development showcasing the commitment to sustainability, Japan Green Investment Corp. for Carbon Neutrality (JICN) has made a significant funding decision to support Oishii Farm Corporation. This reinforcement comes in light of Oishii Farm's ambitious plans to expand its large-scale plant factory located in New Jersey, USA.

The Investment Details

JICN, under the leadership of President Yoshihiko Tayoshi, has decided to allocate an additional $10 million to Oishii Farm. These funds are earmarked for equipment, development, and operational costs associated with the expansion of their New Jersey facility. Notably, this investment is JICN's first engagement in the form of a SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity), which transitioned to equity during Series C financing. This approach highlights JICN's ongoing efforts to ramp up funding support for startups engaged in groundbreaking sustainability initiatives.

Japan Green Investment Corp. has maintained a proactive stance in monitoring Oishii Farm's business practices, with particular focus on their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

Overview of Oishii Farm Corporation

Oishii Farm Corporation, founded on December 12, 2016, by CEO Daiki Koga, has revolutionized the strawberry cultivation process. Relying on innovative Japanese agricultural and industrial technologies, the farm employs natural pollination via bees within its plant factories and has successfully established a consistent production of strawberries. They have set a high standard for quality and sustainability while expanding their market reach across upscale supermarkets and restaurants in the eastern United States.

In June 2023, JICN publicly announced its commitment to support large-scale plant factory construction aimed at enhancing food production capacities in the U.S. The mega-farm utilizing a solar energy supply ensures a minimal carbon footprint while employing advanced robotics for harvesting. As company growth continues, Oishii Farm aims to expand its production units within the factory.

Additionally, the establishment of Oishii Farm, Inc. in Japan is poised to further enhance their operational framework, with plans for an Open Innovation Center in Hamura, Tokyo scheduled for completion by June 2025. Research activities have already commenced in this direction.

Policy Implications of the Funding Decision

This investment holds immense significance in terms of environmental impact and resource efficiency. Traditional strawberry production in the U.S. primarily hinges on California, which necessitates extensive transportation to eastern markets, contributing to greater GHG emissions. Oishii Farm’s approach of producing strawberries closer to demand centers is expected to substantially reduce these emissions.

Moreover, while energy consumption is often a challenge in plant factories, Oishii Farm secures power through adjacent solar installations, leading to a cleaner energy profile.

The farming methods utilized at Oishii Farm ensure consistent, high-quality strawberry production regardless of external weather conditions. They are pioneering a unique business model by amalgamating Japanese farming techniques, seed technology, and robotics, thereby laying the groundwork for global expansion beginning from the U.S.

Oishii Farm plans to strengthen collaborative development with various enterprises at their soon-to-be-built center, focusing on packaging plant factory technologies. By collaborating with Japanese companies, they aim to establish a robust foundation for plant factory technologies, which in turn is expected to enhance agricultural productivity and support new employment opportunities amid declining agricultural labor demographics.

JICN remains committed to fostering a diverse range of sustainable business initiatives by continuing to provide funding and sharing expertise, knowledge, and resources to facilitate the convergence of innovative ideas and technology towards building a sustainable future.
