Tokyo Metro Expands Umbrella Sharing Service 'Aikasa'
In an innovative move towards sustainability, Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd., with its headquarters in Taito City, Tokyo, is set to expand its umbrella-sharing service, 'Aikasa,' across all its stations. Starting from June 11, 2023, commuters will be able to access this service at Shibuya Station on the Ginza Line, which marks the beginning of a broader rollout to all 171 stations operated by Tokyo Metro.
Tokyo Metro had previously introduced the 'Aikasa' service at Korakuen Station on the Marunouchi Line and Shin-Kiba Station on the Yurakucho Line in June 2022, aiming to enhance convenience for commuters caught in unforeseen rain and contribute to a circular economy by reducing the reliance on single-use umbrellas. With the introduction of this service at Shibuya Station, the initiative aligns with Tokyo Metro's medium-term management plan 'Run! – Soar into the Next Generation –' and Nature Innovation Group's (NIG) commitment to eliminating disposable umbrellas by 2030.
What is 'Aikasa'?
'Aikasa' is Japan's first comprehensive umbrella-sharing service, launched in December 2018 with the mission of turning rainy days into comfortable and joyful experiences while working towards the goal of zero disposable umbrellas. The service allows users to borrow durable and sustainable umbrellas from designated 'Aikasa' spots located at stations and various locations around the city. After use, they can conveniently return the umbrellas to any participating spot, making daily commutes more eco-friendly and convenient.
Currently, 'Aikasa' boasts over 750,000 app users and operates in 12 prefectures, including Tokyo, Kanagawa, Osaka, Aichi, Okayama, Fukuoka, and Saga. With over 1,800 umbrella spots available, the service supports a lifestyle where individuals don't have to worry about being caught without an umbrella, thus enhancing the mobility of city dwellers.
Flexible Pricing Plans
Users of 'Aikasa' can choose from two pricing options. The 'Pay-As-You-Go Plan' costs 140 yen per 24 hours, allowing users to pay only for the time they utilize the umbrellas. For those who use umbrellas frequently, the 'Unlimited Use Plan' is available at a monthly rate of 280 yen, which provides better value for anyone needing multiple umbrellas throughout the month.
How to Use 'Aikasa'
Using 'Aikasa' is straightforward. Users are encouraged to download the dedicated app, where they can locate the nearest umbrella-sharing spots, borrow an umbrella, and return it at their convenience. The system is designed to streamline the entire process, ensuring that commuters can travel light even on rainy days.
Planned Expansion Phase
As of June 11, the initial location for 'Aikasa' on the Ginza line will be Shibuya Station (inside the ticket gates), following previous implementations at Korakuen Station (outside the ticket gates) and Shin-Kiba Station (outside the ticket gates). This rollout reflects Tokyo Metro's commitment to innovating public transport experiences and leading towards a more sustainable future.
In conclusion, Tokyo Metro and NIG are taking significant strides towards fostering a greener, more community-focused transportation system. By integrating eco-friendly solutions like 'Aikasa,' they are not only meeting the immediate needs of commuters but also contributing to the long-term vision of a sustainable society.
