Steel Dynamics Releases Third Quarter 2026 Earnings Guidance, Anticipating Strong Performance

Steel Dynamics Provides Q3 2026 Earnings Guidance

On September 17, 2026, Steel Dynamics, Inc. (NASDAQ: STLD) announced its earnings guidance for the third quarter of 2026, projecting a range of $5.34 to $5.38 per diluted share. This marks a significant increase compared to the earnings of $3.69 per diluted share from the previous quarter and a jump from $2.74 for the same quarter last year.

The improved profitability, particularly from the steel operations, is attributed to the expansion in metal margins and record-high shipments. The company anticipates a rise in average realized steel selling values, coupled with lower scrap costs, contributing positively to margins. Steel customer order activity remains robust, thanks to solid demand coupled with persistently low inventories among customers, which is fostering favorable pricing conditions. The strong demand comes primarily from key sectors, including non-residential construction, automotive, energy, and industrial.

However, the earnings from metals recycling are expected to dip, being lower than those from the preceding quarter. This anticipated decrease is mainly due to narrowed metal spreads and slightly diminished shipments in this segment. On a more positive note, Steel Dynamics expects its earnings from steel fabrication operations to show modest improvements, bolstered by a considerable uptick in shipments. Although there was some pressure on metal spreads from increasing steel input costs, these increases were offset by higher selling prices.

The backlog for customer orders is approximately 50% higher than it was during the third quarter of the previous year, with the company seeing promising activity with commercial construction, warehouse development, and healthcare markets maintaining solid demand. As the company looks towards 2027, it expects further growth in steel fabrication volumes, driven by increasing investment in domestic manufacturing, infrastructure spending in the U.S., and ongoing onshoring trends.

Earnings from aluminum operations are projected to display meaningful improvement from the prior quarter as well. The company’s aluminum division is seeing increased shipments and keen momentum from the commissioning of its flat-rolled products mill located in Columbus, Mississippi. All three cold mills are operational, and the initial continuous annealing and solution heat (CASH) line is actively producing commercial materials with the second line set to begin material production for customer qualification by year-end.

During the third quarter of 2026, Steel Dynamics has also repurchased nearly $261 million, which signifies about 1% of its common stock.

The company plans to announce its third-quarter earnings after market hours on October 19, 2026, with a conference call to follow on October 20 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time to discuss business performance and outlook.
