Okayama University Researchers Visit Indian Institute to Combat Cholera Resistance

Researchers from Okayama University’s Gut Health Science Center, Associate Professors Hidetaka Hagitani and Daisuke Imamura, embarked on a significant visit to the National Institute of Bacterial Infectious Diseases in Kolkata, India from July 10 to 11, 2025. This visit was crucial for discussing strategies concerning drug-resistant cholera, a disease that has seen increasing reports in the Kolkata area.

During their stay, the professors initiated discussions on new research projects focusing on the drug resistance of Vibrio cholerae and proposed a regular medical training program to study tropical infectious diseases that are rarely encountered in Japan. This initiative aims to enhance medical understanding and collaboration between the two countries in combating infectious diseases.

The visit included on-site inspections in Kolkata’s slums and local pharmacies, providing them with insights into the underlying factors contributing to the rampant spread of drug-resistant bacteria in the region. By witnessing these conditions firsthand, Hagitani and Imamura gained vital perspectives on the urgent need for collaborative research and intervention strategies that address these public health challenges.

In addition to their research discussions, the professors participated in a dinner meeting at the residence of the Consul General of Japan in Kolkata. This gathering served as an opportunity to showcase Okayama University’s ongoing research efforts in India and emphasized the institution's commitment to enhancing global health. It reflects the university’s mission to contribute positively to health advancements related to gut and human health.

Looking ahead, the Gut Health Science Center at Okayama University is dedicated to advancing research that contributes to improving health outcomes. The center’s focus aligns with its commitment to understanding gastrointestinal health in a broader context, ensuring that its contributions positively impact local and global communities.

As a university committed to serving as a regional core institution with distinctive research capabilities, Okayama University continues to strive for innovation in medical and health-related fields. The adjacency of the university to pressing global health issues, like cholera and other drug-resistant infections, highlights its pivotal role in the pursuit of health solutions.

The delegates expressed their appreciation for the collaboration between Japan and India, aiming to pool resources and expertise to combat diseases that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. The professors emphasized the importance of sustained partnerships that can tackle global health challenges through shared knowledge and collaborative research.

In summary, this visit not only enhances the relationship between Japan and India in the field of infectious disease research but also positions Okayama University as a key player in the global health arena, especially in addressing the challenges posed by diseases like cholera. As the university progresses with its innovative research initiatives, stakeholders and the community can look forward to significant contributions that promote well-being and health across borders.
