Huawei Tackles Industrial Challenges at the ICPC World Finals 2025
In an exhilarating display of intellect and creativity, the St. Petersburg State University team triumphed at the ICPC 2025 World Finals held in Baku, Azerbaijan. This prestigious event marked the 49th edition of the annual International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), bringing together 140 elite teams from over 50 countries across six continents. Participants engaged in a fierce competition that tested their problem-solving skills and coding prowess over 12 intensive challenges.
Huawei, a key supporter of the ICPC, presented a notable challenge that revolved around optimizing mobile photography gallery functionalities. This initiative was designed to bridge the theoretical algorithms learned in academia with practical industry applications. The Huawei Challenge lasted for three hours, during which the University of Tokyo team excelled and secured second place in the main championship, following St. Petersburg’s impressive performance.
Dr. Bill Poucher, the ICPC’s executive director, commended the extraordinary talents displayed throughout the competition. He expressed his congratulations to both the St. Petersburg team and the University of Tokyo, acknowledging the vital support from sponsors, especially Huawei, for their collaboration in the ICPC World Finals Challenge.
Xiao Chunpeng, director of the competition management department at Huawei, shared insights into the evolving landscape where artificial intelligence (AI) is stepping out of laboratories and into real-world scenarios. He emphasized the incredible opportunities this shift presents for today’s youth. Xiao noted, “Huawei has always recognized the value of fundamental research and is honored to collaborate closely with organizations like the ICPC during these international contests. By presenting real-world challenges that the industry currently faces, we can assist the brightest minds in exploring innovative solutions.”
Looking ahead, Huawei plans to work alongside the ICPC to develop additional challenges available online, focusing on software enthusiasts and covering topics such as AI and algorithm competitions. Furthermore, the partnership between Huawei and the ICPC will expand to include training camps, championship challenges, and tech meetings intended to nurture a new generation of talent. Both organizations aspire to discover ways to solve tangible problems within sectors related to AI, IT, and computer technology.
Xiao elaborated on the importance of global talent competitions, highlighting that they not only test participants’ skills but also facilitate the connection of diverse talent ecosystems across various sectors. “Huawei proudly supports these platforms that elevate exceptional talents worldwide, with the hope that future endeavors help young people translate new ideas and technical skills into social progress and industrial development.”
