New Biometric Passport Launch in the DRC Enhances Travel Security for Citizens
Revolutionary Biometric Passport in the DRC
On June 5, 2025, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) proudly announced the launch of its new biometric passport. This state-of-the-art travel document is designed with cutting-edge security features that protect the identities of Congolese citizens. In collaboration with technology partner DERMALOG, the DRC's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has spearheaded this significant initiative.
The newly introduced biometric passport not only adheres to the highest international standards but also incorporates the latest anti-counterfeiting technologies. This includes a contactless RFID chip, a polycarbonate data page, and advanced security elements such as holograms, ultraviolet prints, and watermarks. By integrating these features, the DRC aims to ensure that its passports are both secure and reliable.
The government has invested significantly in a comprehensive solution provided by DERMALOG, encompassing everything from online pre-registration to biometric enrollment and centralized production. Across the nation, 100 fixed and mobile passport stations have been established, as well as 50 mobile units located within Congo's diplomatic representations abroad. Each station is equipped with fingerprint and iris scanners, facial recognition cameras, document scanners, and signature tablets.
This new central production facility allows for the issuance of up to 2,400 passports per day. Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, the State Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Francophonie, stated, “The launch of the new passport is not a hasty decision but a proactive response to evolving international standards. It guarantees our citizens' freedom of movement while ensuring maximum security for their personal data.”
Furthermore, Günther Mull, the CEO of DERMALOG, expressed pride in supporting such a vital project. He mentioned that their solution enhances the country’s digital sovereignty while providing optimal security and efficiency.
The introduction of this new biometric passport marks a pivotal step for the DRC in fortifying the protection of its citizens’ identities. This innovative move lays the groundwork for modern and digital administrative services, thanks to DERMALOG's expertise in biometrics and secure systems.
By enabling a more secure and efficient travel infrastructure, the DRC not only increases the safety of its citizens but also fosters confidence in its administrative capabilities. As the DRC continues to develop its identity management systems, this initiative represents a significant leap toward modern governance and international compatibility in an increasingly globalized world.
