Aker Solutions Secures Major Contract for BalWin2 Offshore Wind Project in Germany

Aker Solutions has recently made headlines by securing a substantial contract with Dragados Offshore, aimed at delivering the steel substructure for the 2GW High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter station for the BalWin2 offshore wind grid connection system located in Germany. This project is primarily developed by Amprion Offshore GmbH, a significant player in European energy infrastructure.

According to the announcement made on May 30, 2025, this contract marks a critical milestone for Aker Solutions. It follows a previous stock exchange release published on February 10, 2025, indicating the importance of this project for both entities involved. As part of the agreement, Dragados has opted to move forward with the construction of the second HVDC converter station, signifying growing confidence in Aker Solutions' capabilities.

Sturla Magnus, Executive Vice President for Aker Solutions' New Build segment, expressed pride in being chosen for this project. He noted, "We are proud that Dragados Offshore has selected Aker Solutions as the contractor for the second BalWin steel substructure. This will enable us to leverage our standardization and industrialization efforts to increase productivity and drive down costs." Such initiatives reflect the ongoing shift toward more sustainable and cost-effective methods in the renewable energy sector.

The fabrication of the HVDC substructures is set to take place at Aker Solutions' yard in Verdal, Norway. At the height of this project, it is expected to employ over 450 individuals, demonstrating the job creation potential within the region. The scope of work for Aker Solutions includes procurement, fabrication engineering, and the construction of the offshore HVDC converter platform substructure. Preparation work is slated to commence in the first quarter of 2026, with the construction phase expected to kick off in Q1 2027. The anticipated delivery of the completed project is set for 2029.

This contract award is significant in the context of Aker Solutions' order intake for the second quarter of 2025, particularly within its Renewables and Field Development segment. Aker Solutions defines a significant contract as one worth between NOK 1.5 billion and NOK 2.5 billion, underscoring the project's financial importance.

As the world shifts towards cleaner energy sources, projects like BalWin2 represent critical steps in advancing renewable energy capabilities and the necessary infrastructure to support them. Aker Solutions' involvement not only enhances its standing as a leader in the industry but also underscores the company's commitment to sustainability and innovation.

In conclusion, Aker Solutions' contract for the BalWin2 offshore wind project exemplifies a growing trend towards collaboration in the energy sector, where companies come together to create solutions that benefit both the environment and the economy. The successful execution of this project will play a key role in meeting future energy demands through renewable sources, positioning Aker Solutions and its partners at the forefront of the green energy revolution.
