As Ryan Neden, the Executive Director of Kid Spark Education, points out, literacy in the 21st century encompasses forming a STEM identity and nurturing an inventive mindset. The Early Childhood STEM & Literacy Program embraces this vision, allowing young minds to explore, innovate, and develop self-confidence as both readers and creators.
Why STEM and Literacy Matter at an Early Age
Research indicates that early educational experiences significantly shape a child's attitude towards learning. By the third grade, many students, particularly from underserved communities, might already lack confidence in their abilities and reading skills. Kid Spark aims to mitigate this by integrating STEM concepts within early literacy instruction. This unique approach not only fosters vocabulary and comprehension but also ignites interest and creativity, empowering young learners to perceive themselves as active participants in their education.
Unpacking the Program Components
The Early Childhood STEM & Literacy Program comprises several innovative components designed to foster engagement and encourage inclusivity:
1. Early Inventors STEM Lab
This hands-on kit is tailored specifically for young learners, featuring durable and reusable engineering materials. Designed to accommodate one or two students, the lab promotes accessibility and collaborative learning.
2. Comprehensive Curriculum
Featuring over 60 project-based lessons, the curriculum encompasses two key categories. The STEM Foundations Lessons introduce basic math, problem-solving, and engineering concepts, while the Storytime Inventing Lessons merge popular children's literature with STEM themes, transforming stories into interactive building challenges.
3. Classroom Resources
Teachers will receive slide companions and student activity guides, all aligned with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. These resources include visual aids, reflection prompts, and real-world connections, making participation in STEM and literacy accessible for all learners, regardless of their background.
4. Storytime Inventing Book Collection
This curated library includes 36 classroom-ready books that link literacy experiences with hands-on STEM activities. The collection features a diversity of genres, including fiction and nonfiction, and includes special themed lessons created in collaboration with Special Olympics Washington.
5. Professional Learning Support
The program provides comprehensive training and materials to ensure educators feel confident delivering the curriculum, regardless of their prior experience with STEM.
Fostering Inclusion Through Collaboration
In an inspiring move, Kid Spark has partnered with Special Olympics Washington to co-create 12 Storytime Inventing lessons that emphasize themes like empathy, teamwork, and perseverance. This collaboration helps students understand that inclusion is a tangible goal, achievable through creativity in literacy and invention.
Expanding Access to High-Quality Education
Recognizing that high-quality STEM and literacy programs are often financially out of reach for many schools in underserved areas, Kid Spark is committed to removing these barriers. Through initiatives like the STEM Grants Initiative, along with partnerships with corporations and local organizations, Kid Spark is working to deliver vital educational resources at little to no cost.
