Harbinger Introduces Revolutionary Plug-In Hybrid for Medium-Duty Fleets

Harbinger Unveils First-of-Its-Kind Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle

In a significant advancement for the medium-duty vehicle sector, Harbinger, a prominent name in the electric and hybrid vehicle manufacturing realm, has announced the introduction of a pioneering series hybrid vehicle tailored for medium-duty fleets. This innovative model incorporates a gas-powered range extender, enabling an impressive estimated range of up to 500 miles between charges—setting it apart as a game-changer in the commercial vehicle space.

The announcement was made during an event held in Los Angeles on April 28, 2025. Harbinger's co-founder and CEO, John Harris, highlighted the diverse applicability of medium-duty vehicles and acknowledged the limitations faced by fleet operators who depend heavily on electric-only solutions. He emphasized that this hybrid model is engineered to meet the specific requirements of fleets whose functions exceed the capabilities of solely electric vehicles.

The newly launched plug-in hybrid vehicle integrates a 1.4-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine, coupled with a state-of-the-art 800V generator designed to recharge the vehicle's battery system, which can be selected between 140 and 175 kWh depending on customer preferences. This system not only delivers robust performance—boasting up to 1,140 lb-ft of torque and 440 horsepower—but also facilitates rapid charging, allowing for an 80% battery charge at DC Fast Charger locations in just one hour.

Harbinger's hybrid chassis has been meticulously developed for various applications, including delivery vans, box trucks, recreational vehicles (RVs), and emergency response units. The comprehensive platform consists of all crucial vehicle components—such as the electric drivetrain, range extender, high voltage battery system, and essential mechanical features—ensuring a streamlined solution for medium-duty vehicle operators.

Production and assembly of the chassis take place at Harbinger's facility in Garden Grove, California, where the company employs a vertically integrated manufacturing process. This approach not only helps in retaining cost efficiency but also shields customers from potential tariff uncertainties associated with imported components. Once the chassis is complete, they are typically transferred to third-party partners that customize them with specialized commercial bodies, aligning seamlessly with industry norms.

In a synergistic collaboration, Harbinger has named Panasonic Energy as its official battery cell supplier. The initial supply will consist of top-tier lithium-ion battery cells produced in Japan, with plans for local sourcing from Panasonic's new facility in De Soto, Kansas, projected in the near future. This partnership aims to enhance the overall performance and sustainability of Harbinger's hybrid models.

Additionally, the innovative features of Harbinger's hybrid platform have caught the attention of THOR Industries—a major player in the RV manufacturing industry. The collaboration will enable the production of high-performance RVs with a promising operating range of up to 500 miles on a single charge, merging luxury and functionality.

This unprecedented model launch follows Harbinger's recent milestones, including the commencement of serial production for its first 100 units, achieved a mere four years post-foundation in 2021. The company also noted the introduction of its IRA Risk-Free Guarantee program, which ensures clients receive the financial benefits associated with the Inflation Reduction Act's Commercial Clean Vehicle Credit, offering peace of mind amid shifting regulatory landscapes.

Harbinger remains committed to revolutionizing the medium-duty vehicle landscape with exceptional electric and hybrid powertrains. The company emphasizes its mission to drive significant innovation in an area that has long awaited transformative progress, striving for solutions that cater to the growing demand for advanced, versatile vehicles designed for commercial use.
