Taiwan Mobile's AI Ocean Project Wins Prestigious Award

In a landmark event at the AI with Purpose Global Summit held in Taipei, Taiwan Mobile's AI Ocean Project triumphed by winning the coveted International Biodiversity Award. This summit, co-hosted by Taiwan Mobile, the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), and the Taiwanese Association of Electrical and Electronic Industries (TEEMA), fostered discussions around the intersection of artificial intelligence and sustainability.

A Gathering of Experts

The two-day summit brought together nearly 1,000 prominent figures from industry, government, and academia, focusing on the potential roles of AI in creating sustainable infrastructures and solutions. During the closing ceremony, it was announced that Taiwan Mobile's AI Ocean Project was selected from over 24 global contenders, marking a significant moment in the recognition of Taiwan's leadership in applying AI toward ecological conservation.

This win marks the second consecutive year that Taiwan Mobile has received international acknowledgment, following the Smart City Award for their MyCharge service in 2024. This continued success emphasizes Taiwan's commitment to harnessing technology for environmental preservation and sustainable practices.

The Innovative AI Ocean Project

The AI Ocean Project stands out for its innovative approach, which incorporates AI image recognition, generative AI chatbots, and citizen engagement to create Taiwan's first comprehensive knowledge database dedicated to marine life. To date, over 9,000 community members have contributed upwards of 19,000 images, aiding the AI system in identifying more than 150 key marine species native to Taiwan's waters.

Iris Liu, Vice President of Sustainable Brand Management and PR at Taiwan Mobile, highlighted the project as a testament to the company's dedication to the Digital with Purpose initiative, which they have championed since 2020. Liu emphasized that the award is not simply about technological innovation but underscores the value of leveraging digital energy for transformative sustainability.

Additionally, Luís Neves, CEO of GeSI, underscored the significance of the summit and the underlying philosophy of AI with Purpose. He remarked, 'This is not a competition to dominate the planet; it is about collective efforts to build a peaceful and sustainable future for all.' Neves affirmed GeSI's commitment to returning to Taipei next year for further discourse.

Taiwan's Vision for Sustainable AI

Richard Lee, Chairman of TEEMA, echoed the vision set forth during the summit, stating, 'AI must be a force for social good and ecological sustainability.' He reaffirmed Taiwan's dedication to the sustainable development of AI and the importance of global cooperation in this endeavor.

Events like the AI with Purpose Global Summit showcase how technology can serve as a catalyst for significant environmental and social impacts. Taiwan Mobile's AI Ocean Project not only enriches understanding of marine ecosystems but also inspires collaborative efforts across borders, all aimed at promoting a sustainable future. As the world continues to face environmental challenges, projects like this pave the way for innovative solutions through technology and community involvement.

The achievement of the AI Ocean Project serves as a reminder of the powerful role that positive technological advancements can play in creating a sustainable and healthy environment for future generations.
