ADF Art Gallery Project Vol. 45: Sumitake's Solo Exhibition 'Rhythm Wears Life'

The Aoyama Design Forum (ADF) proudly presents the 45th edition of its Art Gallery Project featuring a solo exhibition by artist Sumitake, titled 'Rhythm Wears Life.' Running from July 10 (Friday) to July 29 (Wednesday), 2026, this exciting showcase will be held at GARDE Gallery in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo.

The exhibition revolves around the theme conveyed in Sumitake's recently published photobook, 'Rhythm Wears Life,' released in April 2026. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore art pieces that delve into the concept of life's connective rhythm, inviting them to experience the profound link between existence and time. An opening reception will take place on July 10 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, where everyone is welcome to join the celebration.

About Sumitake

Sumitake, primarily known for his portrait photography, often integrates physical techniques such as slits, embroidery, and light onto printed subjects, creating a new aesthetic that transcends the fixed boundaries of traditional photography. By doing so, his compositions evoke universal emotions that resonate beyond the individual stories of his subjects. His recent works, particularly those enhanced with embroidery, illustrate how these tactile elements add depth to his photographs, transforming two-dimensional visuals into a more tangible, three-dimensional experience. This innovative technique imbues traditional reproductions with uniqueness, elevating their artistic value.

Sumitake's art signifies universal beauty and emotion, rhythmic in nature, connecting individuals and transcendently embodying life itself. His works present a narrative that surpasses personal existence, revealing the interconnectedness of beauty and vitality shared among beings.

Artist Background

Born in 1981 in Kyoto, Japan, Sumitake graduated from Meiji University with a degree in Literature before completing studies in Information Design at Tama Art University. His artistic focus, centered on uncovering the visible world, emphasizes a strong appreciation for corporeal sensations. Apart from 'Rhythm Wears Life,' his previous publications include 'Swimming in the Sky' (2012) and 'Fingers and Stars' (2019).

His artwork has been included in the agnès b. collection, and he has contributed to various book covers and advertising visuals. Notably, his visuals have been featured in a documentary about ALS individuals and an art project themed around LGBTQ+ families titled 'Silhouette Family Exhibition' (held in 2023). He remains actively engaged in socially relevant artistic endeavors.
