Discover the Joy of Running: Kids' Running Class

As the autumn sports season approaches, Tokyo's Komazawa Olympic Park is gearing up for the "Fukoku Seimei 2026 Green Ribbon Running Festival". This event will feature a special running class designed for children aged 5 to 12, taking place on October 12, 2026.

Why This Class?

With the change in seasons, children have more opportunities to run, whether in sports days or physical education classes. This unique running class aims to change the perception around running for kids—transforming it from a mere race against the clock into a fun and empowering activity. Under the guidance of Kenji Yawata, a former professional hurdler and representative of Japan at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, children will learn that running can be enjoyable and fulfilling.

This event is themed "I Love Running," promoting a sense of enjoyment and confidence through running. The class isn't focused solely on speed or finishing time; instead, Yawata emphasizes that discovering personal strengths is crucial, encouraging children to feel excited about running and open to trying again.

Program Highlights

Kenji Yawata will lead the children through an engaging session filled with practical running techniques. Participants will develop their skills by:
  • - Running on the competition track to experience the thrill of the sport.
  • - Observing Yawata’s athletic form and identifying useful body movements.
  • - Learning essential tips for faster running and ways to improve their starting techniques.
  • - Testing what they’ve learned right on the field during the session.

The program is structured into three parts, each targeting different age groups:
  • - Part 1: 10:00 AM - 10:40 AM (Ages 5 - 3rd grade)
  • - Part 2: 11:40 AM - 12:20 PM (1st - 4th grades)
  • - Part 3: 1:30 PM - 2:10 PM (3rd - 6th grades)

Cost and Registration

The participation fee for the running class is 500 yen (tax included), along with a 212 yen entry charge. Each session accommodates 50 children on a first-come, first-served basis, and registration will close on September 27, 2026.

Family Fun at the Festival

The "Fukoku Seimei Green Ribbon Running Festival" also includes a Family Run where kids can enjoy running alongside their parents. This is a wonderful opportunity to bond as a family while engaging in a healthy activity together.

About the Festival

The Green Ribbon symbolizes a global commitment to organ donation awareness. The festival aims to deepen understanding of organ transplantation through running, featuring a range of events from a half marathon to shorter distances, ensuring that all generations can participate.
